Man, this one hurts. I'm glad they clinched a playoff berth for him in his final weekend on earth. RIP to the man who brought us the Philadelphia Flyers.
When a parade was held to celebrate the Flyers' arrival in Philadelphia, about 25 people showed up.
Seven years later, two million hockey-crazed fans attended a parade after the Flyers became the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup.

Pravda ran this cartoon the day after the Flyers beat the Red Army team in 1976:

I think the Russians intended it to be an insult rather than the compliment it obviously was.

No wonder they lost the Cold War. Big babies.

If anyone is unfamiliar with the NHL vs Red Army series in 1976, and the Flyers victory in particular, it's worth reading about.
Cliffs Notes: Red Army rolled through the NHL teams until they got to Philly. Flyers knew they couldn't match up with the Russian finesse and pure skill, so intimidation would be necessary. After one check of a Russian winger, the Russian coach called his team off the ice and into the locker room during the live TV broadcast. Ed Snider negotiated with the Russian coaches to get them to come back out. Finally, he said if you don't get back out there we're not paying you. They came back out and got curb stomped.
