Odd. Black players have been in the league for years, the most famous being former Calgary captain Jarome Iginla (still in the league). Also of note would be Montreal LW Donald Brashear, who was sent to the hospital with less than five seconds left in a game with Boston by a two-handed stick-shot to the head by badboy Marty McSorley.

Thanks for clearing that up. Being a Flyers fan, I've never heard of this Brashear guy you mention or Wayne Simmonds or Claude Vilgrain or Ray Emery or Sandy McCarthy or Pierre-Edouard Bellemare.

The only time I hear about black hockey players when they score a game-winning goal and then you hear stories about racist hockey fans on Twitter

It's pretty bad. They threw bananas on the ice at Simmonds once during a shootout attempt.

Wasn't Philadelphia! We'll probably get blamed for it.

A crowd in Czechoslovakia also chanted "monkey" at him.

That must have been a long time ago. Czechoslovakia hasn't existed for many years.

So my son's soccer team was playing a game about a month ago. The opposing team was made up of kids of immigrants from somewhere in eastern Europe. The parents and players were communicating in a foreign language during the game. One of the words they were using sounded like the "n" word. My son has 2 African-Americans on his team and their parents took offense to the word thinking they were referring to their sons in a derogatory manner. After the game the parents approached the coach of the other team to discuss what they heard from the parents of his team. After considerable back-and-forth, it was determined that the word they were using actually means something like "keep away" in their language, meaning to not force the ball into traffic. The foreign parents were extremely apologetic and defused the situation quickly. The parents of the black players were a bit embarrassed.

Grant Fuhr was pretty famous - what was it, 5 Stanley Cups and inducted into the Hall of Fame? Could be a little more popular than Iginla.

But it was soccer. Non-english is the norm. Along with extreme pussification and the lack of personal hygiene. :coffee:

Willie O'Ree still comes to the local rink in Anacostia often to visit. My son's HS team plays there and supports the kids in the area with tutoring and mentoring. :thumb:

Yup, the only one in DC other than Verizon Center (not counting the outdoor winter one on the Mall).
