I wouldn't want our athletes to compete in the shithole/shitswamp they call Brazil.

Re: Olympics!!!!!!
This is what happens when the Olympics, certainly over the course of time, makes it a habit to rob these poor countries blind by letting them host the Olympics. It's been a pattern since at least Montreal in 1976 that whenever a poorer country holds these games that much of the rapid building they have to do just to host these games ends up being left idle for decades afterwards. It's a sin that they still get poor countries lined up to spend gobs of money building things they don't really need. If they get one Olympics cancelled entirely maybe that will make them think twice about this idea of robbing these poorer countries blind.

Unless you want a pandemic they should be postponed until a resolution is found.

You should probably start a thread about the Olympics possibly being canceled...we don't have one yet.

Re: Olympics!!!!!!
Apparently Brazil is running a promotion where you don't need a passport of visa to go to the Olympics, just buy your tickets.
I'm sure that will turn out swimmingly.

Re: Olympics!!!!!!
Pandemic? Haha.
Let's set the over/under on percent chance that the Olympics are cancelled or moved?
I'll set it at 0.000000000000000000693% chance.
I'd say zero, but I have to get paid haha.
Play on.

IAAF bans the Russian Track and Field team from international competition (includes the Olympics) for lack of adequate doping testing procedures (or something like that).

One thing I heard was there were actually Ruskie athletes running for their lives when people showed up to test them.tribe_pride wrote:IAAF bans the Russian Track and Field team from international competition (includes the Olympics) for lack of adequate doping testing procedures (or something like that).

Jama Aden a coach from Somalia has reportedly been arrested in Spain with EPO (and maybe other PEDs?). He coaches a lot of top track middle and distance runners including some world record holders. Will be interesting to see if any of his athletes don't run in Rio.

"....My advice to people coming for the Olympics is this: start praying that God will protect you, as soon as you step out of the airport.'...
....He said: 'There are shootouts every day. Even the embassies are now warning tourists not to come here. And I don't blame them.....
....'Don't come to Rio de Janeiro. Right now, Rio is a dangerous place to be. Here, there won't be any Olympics, there won't be any celebrations. There will just be more shootings.'....."
Add on Zika and these will be the worst attended Olympics of our lifetines. What a fooking disaster...

Re: Olympics!!!!!!
Not looking good for the Olympics. Lots of sunk costs, so they probably won't be cancelled altogether. However, some of the riskier events (like rowing/swimming in harbors full of shyt) may be scrapped.

I've heard of more people withdrawing than actual going.
There has to be extreme corruption as to how Brazil got the World Cup and Olympics in the same cycle.

Re: Olympics!!!!!!
The whole process is just rank corruption through and through. The Olympics and the IOC are a scourge on non-first world nations. They exist almost solely to line the pockets of Olympic officials and to give these guys a fancy party they can attend once every four years. None of these IOC guys are going to be anywhere near the roads and the public transit that is so decrepit and dangerous in Rio. They'll be flying in private helicopters from their fancy yachts whenever they do deem it necessary to be near any event or game. Otherwise it's party time on the yachts and fancy hotels. And after the two weeks are up, they'll pull anchor and sail away, probably not paying a dime for anything, and leaving Rio as crappy as it was before, but just now hundreds of millions of dollars more in debt and saddled with sporting facilities that will be falling apart over the next 20-30 years. Not sure Rio needs a velodrome when they can't even find decent housing or food for a large swath of their population. It's a racket and amazing that it is still going on today.clenz wrote:I've heard of more people withdrawing than actual going.

Either have the Olympics in countries that can actually afford this extravagance, or have already built the infrastructure to host these things without having to break the bank to build them from scratch, or just don't have them at all. Is the world really going to be worse off if we don't have an every four year competition to see who the best rhythmic gymnast is at twirling a ribbon, or who the best trampoliner person is, or who's really best at ping pong? We already have yearly world championships for mostly every one of these events that are in the Olympics. The Olympics were a nice idea when it wasn't dominated by the uber-wealthy trying to get an all expense paid fortnight of debauchery and partying at the expense of wide swaths of populations barely rising above subsistence-level living.

Now who can argue with that? I think we're all indebted to GannonFan for clearly stating what needed to be said. I'm particularly glad that these lovely children were here today to hear that speech. Not only was it authentic frontier gibberish, it expressed a courage little seen in this day and age.GannonFan wrote:The whole process is just rank corruption through and through.
