I do give him credit for stepping aside before breaking any meaningful records, other than most stolen dollars.

Good point. I'm wondering whether the $27 million next year will still count against the salary cap, since he'll be a special assistant (or whatever his title will be), and not a player.

Not sure, but it should. The Yankees offered the contract and should have to live with the consequences.

Yup,
It's a players contract and can be modified by the player only
Regardless of his "job title" his remaining $26 million over these next 14 months is on the MLB team books

Just like Bonds - an all time great player who just couldn't resist the lure of cheating and trying to be even that much of a greater player. Pity, because now, like Bonds, he's destined for exclusion from the HOF and any real mention as one of the greats of all time. Cheating has consequences.

Agreed. Although it's good to see the Olympics starting to see some of the pushback against cheating, if not pushback by the governing bodies than at least by other athletes and the spectators.
