The U.S. Coast Guard said Fernandez was one of three people killed in a boat crash off Miami Beach. Fernandez was 24 years old.
The Marlins announced that Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves has been canceled.
"The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of José Fernández. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time," the team said in a statement.

How fucking retarded do you have to be to kill yourself in a boat?
I've been on the water my whole life and can never understand it.

It happened "early Sunday morning" so I'm guessing booze was involved.

Yep. Traveling at full speed in the dark. If you saw pics of the boat you knew there was no WAY anyone survived that. Brutal impact with a stone jetty.

Sad teenaged 93henfan had to listen to the same jokes from NJ/NY fans when Pelle Lindbergh ate a brick wall in his 911 Turbo.
Can't pass up a chance to recycle!

Supposedly the boat involved & its owner were well-known by the Coast Guard or whoever was responsible to patrol the waters there where the crash occurred. It's still early and more details will come out but it almost sounds like a Paul Walker parallel. Friend driving way too fast. Even if it was midnight - this happened right at the Port of Miami where the cruise ships go out - I imagine it wasn't pitch black out.

Accidents happen. Carelessness.
Where Lockwood Blvd is today used to be the Ashley River until the 1950s/60s. Well, in the 30s my grandfather and his brother were working on a boat when a friend stopped by the dock and he was smoking a cigarette. There was an explosion on the boat and the friend died. My grandfather and his brother suffered extensive burns but survived. Carelessness...it'll get you every time.
Unless you're Hillary.

Yup...your boat doesn't end up on top of the rock pile unless you were doing the stupid macho speed thing.
Clowns like that are a threat to everyone else on the water. Better they took themselves out than someone else.

Just saw the highlights of the Marlins first game since Fernandez's death. Dee Gordon, while wearing JF's helmet, took the first pitch batting right handed, then switched to his natural left-handed stance and hit his first homer of the year. He was in tears by the time he got back to the dugout. Moving stuff.
