So I didn't hear the post-race... what the hell happened to Chase Elliott? Did he just eff up or did he have car issues. He dropped like a rock.

You tend to drop like a rock when you run of gas with 3 laps to go..

Running put of gas last 3 laps were Elliott, Larson, Truex, Menard, Kahne..
I think only 26 of 40 were still on track after last caution and only 5 with 0 damage.

Btw, the stages added 20 minutes to this Daytona 500 over average of the past two.
And it seemed like more than that. I really don't understand why:
1. They now throw a red flag for a non life-threatening caution because it's near the end of a stage.
2. It takes 20 minutes to clear the track of a routine crash in 2017.
C'mon NASCAR. You can do better.

Crappy announcing then by Fox. Maybe I missed it, but the only one they kept talking about having fuel issues was.... Kurt Busch.

Chase Elliott didn't run out of gas with three laps to go. He finished on the lead lap. I believe he sputtered on the back stretch on the final lap, as did Truex. They all finished on the lead lap though. Top 15 all finished 200 laps.

How the hell do you run out of gas?
Soccer moms run out of gas
Just another piece of evidence that NASCAR is a pussy sport... if it was a sport, but it isn't

It was definitely a fuel issue, but was it Elliott's fault that he didn't switch over to the reserve tank sooner? Either way, he would have been out before the finish. Gordon says "Out of fuel, out of fuel." when he lost the lead...

By the way, here's the finish. As you can see, Menard and Kahne were just fine on fuel. Not sure where BDK got that from. Maybe didn't watch the race? Cars that fell off were Larson, Truex, and Elliott and maybe a couple more:

Reserve tank?

Reserve tank?

http://www.nascar.com/en_us/news-media/ ... eries.html
The "right switch" his team referred to controlled the fuel pump to the reserve fuel tank, a small secondary unit located inside the car's fuel cell. The small box holds less than a gallon of fuel. As the fuel in the primary cell burns off and the level of the fuel drops, the small amount of fuel, less than one gallon, in the reserve stays constant.
Most, if not all, Sprint Cup teams have similar units inside their car's fuel cells.
"Basically you're allowed to run like a little Kevlar tank inside your fuel cell," Rodney Childers, crew chief for the Stewart-Haas Racing No. 4 Chevrolet with Kevin Harvick, said. "It's just a little square box with round hole in it. ... You can basically run the car out of fuel and then flip the switch, which there's a pump inside that little box, and at least get back to pit road."

It's not a reserve tank. It's the same fuel cell. If the primary pickup sucks air, they can try a secondary pickup or shake the car. You can see Chase do a shake when he loses pickup for a split second with three to go. That lasted him another two laps, as he didn't run out until around turn two or the backstretch of the final lap. I guess you could think of it as a reserve tank, but there's only one fuel cell.
