Sports Talk Radio

So we're a day away from the round of 64 starting and Maryland, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Mount St Mary's are all in the field. The Capitals and Wizards are both fighting for first place (one for the league, the other for the conference), the Nationals are in spring training, NASCAR and golf are in full swing... so what do they talk about for hours on end?... the Redskins. I know the NFL is king, but we're a month away from the draft, the big free agent moves occurred last week, there is really nothing going on in the NFL, but it's all they can talk about. Maybe it's because the Skins are such a shit show.

My question is, are other markets like this? I was wondering what local sports talk radio is like in say St Louis Flaggy, where you only have the Cards and Blues now... do they still talk NFL a lot? How about clenzy where the loyalties are split between a bunch of pro cities. Does local radio suck so you're left with the national dummies?

We have 3 sports talk stations in the Twin Cities. And yes, they do talk NFL a majority of the time. I'll switch to a different station if it's too much NFL football, and hope one of the others is talking about something else.

St. Louis radio is spending a lot of time on the Cardinals and Blues right now. They do hit on the national headlines too, but from high altitude. It is relatively sane here. The problem is that if there is a low altitude story on the Cards or Blues, you will hear about it for each segment throughout the day with the different show hosts.

I am OK with St. Louis sports talk shows. I'm a proponent of multiple host shows. There is only one in the early morning where it is just one guy talking. He's OK (originally from Baltimore) but there are very few laughs and spouts a lot of stats to back his opinion. The afternoon shows are entertaining and I get some good laughs from their banter. One of their signature moves is the "Let's say" line where one guy says, for example, "Let's say, you went to the store". The other guys will immediately say "You went to the store".
But the funny part to me is that they continue on as if it was never repeated and it isn't a joke.

However, I'd much rather listen to the fapping on the radio about the shit-show that is the Redskins than what I have to listen to up here. It's basically 75% Yankees, 10% Giants (but only when they're doing well, as is the norm with most New York fans), 5% Mets/Tebow, 5% Rangers and then 5% for everything else (Islanders, Knicks, Nets, everything outside NY, etc.)

That's not funny at all.

It's a Midwest thing. I don't expect you to understand.

It's pretty even here between the Panthers and the Hornets. There's the occasional NASCAR story but nothing out of the ordinary. I rarely hear anything about the Hurricanes (but they suck so, does it matter?).

I wouldn't expect a bad NHL team to get any coverage in North Carolina.

It doesn't even get a mention. UNC-C gets more air time.

Or a good one. Did anyone even care when they won the cup? :?

That was news in Charleston. That entire season was. But that was 10,11 years ago? What have they done for us since?

Iowa is almost exclusively national sports radio. ESPN radio and Fox Sports radio are huge. That's about it. UNI has a daily talk show from 5-6 PM, hosted by the play by play guy for football and basketball, on a station in Waterloo/Cedar Falls. It's on the station that carries UNI athletics, which isn't a sports station, it's a news talk station.

There are two sports station in CF/Waterloo, one is Fox Sports all day but will play Jim Rome rather than Rich Eisen. The other is ESPN 24/7.

Cedar Rapids has a station with 3 frequencies - the oldest and main is an AM signal. The station is KGYM, so they call the AM station "The Historic Main Gym", they broadcast on a smaller scale on two FM frequencies - one pointed south towards Iowa City (call The South Gym) and the other north (called The North Gym). This is ESPN radio, but from 3P-7P there is a local show called "The Afternoon Players Club". It's formatted much like the Dan Patrick show in that there is a "main host" but there is a second host that talks just as much and they are involving their producer in the conversation a ton. It's pretty damn popular around here. The CR/IC area is like 99% Hawkeye and Chicago sports fans. They spent 85-98% of the show (depending on the season) talking about the Hawkeyes and then fill the rest in with Chicago sports talk. The Hawkeyes are the NFL/NBA team of the area. They are all that matters. They are all that drives the ratings. They also take a pretty national approach to most of the show that isn't Hawk focused though. Take a macro view on a number of national topics, and try to relate it back to how it affects local teams. I listened to that show every day when I moved to CR. However, I quickly grew tired of the Hawk talk and total disrespect towards UNI, so I stopped.

Since all of my teams are Minnesota based (Twins, Vikings, T'wolves, Wild) I listen to KFAN out of Minneapolis. It's the #1 rated station in the state and every show they have is #1 rated for that time slot. I listen to the 5:30-9AM show. It's 75% sexual innuendo jokes that 14 year olds would make, 20% NFL talk, and then 5% everything else. I listen because it's funny. It's 4 guys, and a host of in studio guests, that talk like any group of 4 best friends would when drinking and watching the game. 9-12 is hosted by the Vikings PXP guy. I listen in season but not out of season. 12-3 and 6:30 is sports but mostly Minneapolis related stories, and I don't like their "Schtick".

But yeah, mostly it's all national shows around here.

St Louis doesn't have an NFL team. Think that might have something to do with it?

Did that guy in the middle/front think he was going to a BLM rally/riot?

Of course. I'm just answering 89's question. Don't get sassy with me or I will stop sending you free cases of Bud Light.

I use to listen to local and national sports talk a ton. Now it's a little ESPN during football and the local Patchins and Lukens on the ESPN affiliate show through football and hoops. They are long time pros who cover Seattle pro sports, EWU, WSU, Gonzaga, Idaho, WHL, IFL but will admittedly still talk Seahawks in the offseason due to demand.

Other than Mike and Mike, ESPN sucks compared to what it used to be. Beau Monte Jones? Wow.... :ohno:

Podcasts occupy most of my listening these days. I should probably go find Cowherd because he was really good at his craft, but I don't even know who the local Fox affiliate is. I assume Fox radio still sucks as bad as the rest of their productions?
