Washington DC Big 4 Sports Streak

Post by Gil Dobie »

How many consecutive times has a Washington Big 4 sports (Baseball, Football, Hockey, Basketball) team lost a quarterfinal round and when was the last time a team went to the conference finals? Were the 1998 Caps the last team to advance past the quarters?

Let's see. Since 1998...

Nats - lost NLDS in 2012, 14 and 16
Caps - lost in the first round 5 times and second round 6 times
Zards - lost in the first round 3 times and second round 4 times
Skins - well they just suck and I hate the Skins, so who cares?

I actually went through the NFL playoffs for my Skins friends to throw it in their face. I think there were only 3 teams in the NFL that haven't been to a conference championship game since 1992. Two playoff wins in 24 years.

Eh, IMO not advancing far (at all) in the playoffs is not nearly as bad as the season basically being over and meaningless before all the games are played because of a piss poor record. Having meaningful games to watch through the entire season and then into the first (and only first) round of playoffs is more enjoyable to me than having to watch the 4th place NFC East team the last few games of the season play meaningless games.

Yeah, it would be nice for one of the big 3 (not sure who the 4th team is?) advance in the playoffs, at least once (just once!), but it's not as bad as having nothing worth watching at all.

BTW, isn't DC tied with Minny for longest championship drought of cities with all four sports?

Prolly, one Washington team moved to Minnesota and became the Twins. 1991 in MLB, never in the NFL or the NHL and 1954 in the NBA, but I'm not a big fan of the Minnesota teams, hate the Vikings.
