Got to meet him at an autograph signing a few years back. True gentleman, coached the Minneapolis Lakers to 5 NBA championships and 1 NBL Championship prior to the NBA.

RIP Coach

Dang. I figured he had to be pretty old in order to have coached the Minneapolis Lakers. 101. RIP. I know it's late. But RIP.

Some former Navy guy from Pennsylvania, that went on to win 5 NBA rings as a coach, so that means he didn't coach the 76ers.

Well, considering he was done coaching pro basketball before the 76'ers even came into existence, then yes, I think it's pretty clear he didn't coach the Sixers. Heck, this guy was winning NBA titles back when black players weren't allowed in the NBA. :coffee:

You know, I suspect coaching meant more then back when he did it. And it's not just the Black players thing. I think the NBA business model has evolved into one in which the effect of coaching is minimized. They could have rules and game officials tendencies that would mean that teamwork and such is more important. But I don't think they do. They have the rules and the way in which officials call games set up to emphasize individual skills.

First African American players in the NBA, started in 1950, Lakers won in 1952, 53 & 54. First African American to play for the Lakers was Bobby Williams, 1955-56 season.
