Do any of you follow Rugby? I’ve only casually watched when I’ve been in Irish bars but I went to a match this weekend. My nephew plays with a club and they have been in Charlotte the past weekends. We’ve really enjoyed watching - even though I still don’t understand all the rules. The coaches are former players from the Australian and Canadian National teams and this team is good. They won both matches yesterday but 20+ points - against two good Charlotte clubs.

it’s non stop action. I’m sure a few of those boys were playing with a concussion.

My nephew will also be playing Rugby and LAX at The Citadel when he matriculates in the fall.

Yes. Professional rugby passed the NFL for me back around 2010. We never should have altered rugby in the first place.

Yes the forward pass is exciting, and yea, the big crushing hits are exciting - but when we changed rugby to make it more exciting, we made it MUCH mire dangerous, and I think we guaranteed its future demise.

As for the sport itself, I think it has just the right combination of finesse and brute force. The mechanics of the game make pads and helmets mostly unnecessary. I wish we had more kids playing it ..... because our national team (full side) is embarrassing. Even the Japanese and sometimes Togo curb stomp us. By the end of the world cup I'm usually pulling for whatever Seven Nations team is still in. I casually follow the All Blacks.

Sevens is better for the US because if you have a couple guys with raw speed they can find the corners easily. Full sides takes a lot mire strategy because you can cover the whole width of the field with eleven.

Started watching it a couple of years ago when I was introduced to it by couple of New Zealanders in South Korea. Now I try to watch it every chance I get. Much rather watch it than American football. Don't really have a team, but do follow the All Blacks the closest.

I agree - I've tried to watch it and it's not terribly strategic or interesting enough to hold my attention. I actually prefer Australian Rules immensely to just plain rugby. And football is certainly more watchable, despite the stops in play.

I've been a fan of rugby since a bunch of friends played for UNI's club team. I've loosely followed the sport since then, including watching full squads and 7's on TV and watching the All Blacks crush the Eagles at Soldier Field. I had a friend who went on to play for Palmer College of Chiropractic with a bunch of guys from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, etc. who I went to see play.

Football is going to need to adapt to survive and it could learn a lot from rugby (tackling, sportsmanship, etc.). Pete Carroll teaches rugby style tackling to reduce the risk of head injuries.

We tend to do much better at sevens since there's less strategery in it and more "just run thataway" involved

You do realize that Tottenham Hotspur is building a new, $1B plus stadium, with some of the design in place so that they can lure NFL games there? The NFL in the UK is a pretty established thing that isn't going away. There'll be a London franchise in 10 years and it will be successful. American football has adapted to safety concerns over the past 100+ years, and it will continue to do so for at least as long as we're all alive.
