Sven-Goran Eriksson has been sacked as Mexico coach after an embarassing 3-1 World Cup qualifying defeat to Honduras on Wednesday.

The former England coach has been told to leave his job by the Mexican Football Federation after failing to impress in the qualifying campaign. President Justino Compeán confirmed the news on Thursday at a press conference: ''This morning we said we had to take some measures because we could not take risks with qualification for the World Cup, and we could not rely solely on results at the Estadio Azteca.

''This morning we had a meeting with Mr Eriksson and although it is a shame for me and a lot of people, we told Mr Eriksson that his spell with the national team was over.''

Asked about Eriksson's possible successor, Nestor de la Torre, director of the Committee of National Teams, added: ''At the right moment we'll announce the next step, but we ask the media to wait a little bit to know what is going to happen.

Anyone else watch Special 1 TV (formerly I'm on Setanta Sports)? This should make for some great material.

This kinda sucks actually. I liked the fact that Mexico hasn't really been a challenge to the U.S. in a while... :(

Hey, Scolari is available, right?!?!

it will be better if CONCACAF can get 4 teams though. Right now Mexico looks like a #4 team.

A Swede, formerly a coach in England, gets canned by the Mexicans. Only in America! :P
