Harper to Phillies

Post by 93henfan »

Per ESPN: http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/2610 ... eal-harper
The Philadelphia Phillies appear to have won the Bryce Harper sweepstakes, finalizing a 13-year, $330 million deal with the free-agent outfielder, league sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan on Thursday.

Harper's contract will not include any opt-outs

If those numbers are right AND there's no opt-out, media speculation of 10 years at $350M and a three year opt-out were WAY off and the Phils held the cards all along. Great get. He's not the best player in the league, but he's top 10 to 20 and marketable as hell. He'll look great batting just ahead of Mike Trout in two years.

I’m shocked. So it was the money all along, not the sunny climes of SoCal near the Vegas hometown. Who knew?

For the Phils, it sure is nice having Comcast as a sugar daddy.

And he'll be here forever as well, so he better produce. Word is it's $330M, 13 years, no opt outs and a full no trade clause. Apparently he wants to be somewhere long term. At just over $25M per year it's the kind of contract that allows the Phils to get Trout in a couple of years too. Maybe that was another carrot for Harper, knowing the Phils could be legit players for the most famous Eagles season ticket holder?

Trout would be a much more exciting acquisition to me than Harper.

Of course he would be, but he's not available yet. Give it a year for a trade or two years for the free agency, but signing Harper hasn't taken the Phils out of the Trout-stakes.

He's a roller coaster for sure. He has nowhere near the fire in his belly he had when he came in the league. Hell, he doesn't even run out ground balls any more. I always liked him and am bummed he's gone, but the Nats line-up looks better this year than last. Of course we have to wait for the games to be played to see if that's the case.

Can't wait for Harper vs Scherzer this year.

Agreed, there's plusses and minuses with him. On the bright side, with the short porch in right field at Citizen's Bank, Harper may not have to run the bases at any faster a pace than a home run trot most of the time.

It's really cool the Phillies are out of contention for the rest of my lifetime.

Braves will dominate that division for years to come

Harper to Phillies

Post by css75 »

Just what makes Phil’s fans think Trout will come back home? He likes SoCal.

While Harper may be marketable, he is a clubhouse cancer, and Nats never won anything with him. In a few years, this could look like a bad signing. Myself, I like Arenado much more.

The fact is they stole him...
He's getting $25 Mil a season - in 4 years 10% of the league will be getting damn near that much a season.
A-Rod got more than that a season from the Yankees 10 years ago

It's that simple
He's a generational player still only 26
they stole him

And yet there's Trout, at every Eagles home game, with his box of season tickets in the endzone, enjoying himself despite the winter weather. Certainly not a gimme, but Trout's not staying in Anaheim when it's time for him to be a free agent.
