30 teams x 25 players x average salary = total payroll of MLB
If Average salary goes up, and # of teams and # of players per team stays constant, how can the TOTAL payroll for MLB go DOWN?

Guys at top are getting paid a lot and guys at the bottom get paid nothing. Must be a couple new really high salaries and a lot more low ones.

Doesn't matter. Mathmatically, if the AVERAGE goes up, and the # of players remains the same, TOTAL payroll has to go up. What am I missing here?

Yeah you are right. No matter what the number of players shouldn't change so the average would have to go up.
