Dak wants $40 million/year

The Dallas Cowboys are familiar with this dance.

When they finally approached Dak Prescott to broach the topic of his inevitable contract extension, they did so with an initial offer in hand. While, officially, it's unknown what their first offer was, there's a new report that suggests the latest offer from the team involves an average annual salary of around $30 million -- per Michael Lombardi of The Athletic -- which lends to a recent proclamation by team exec Stephen Jones that Prescott, Amari Cooper, and Ezekiel Elliott all have "top-5" deals in front of them.

The problem for the Cowboys is obvious because a $30 million per year offer was more attractive earlier this offseason before two major events took place.

In April, the Seattle Seahawks reset the QB market by awarding Russell Wilson a historic four-year, $140 million extension that includes $107 million in guaranteed money and, two months later, the Philadelphia Eagles raised the floor by granting Carson Wentz a four-year, $128 million extension that quietly exceeds Wilson's guaranteed metric with $107.87 million. That realistically puts the window for negotiation between $32 million AAS (average annual salary) and $35 million AAS, because Prescott isn't apt to accept less money than Wentz, and for good reason.

it is mesmerizing how bad NFL management is at understanding position value...

A) No wide receiver is worth more than $15 Mil - not one (period) 15 is fine but that's the drop dead point
as long as an NFL offense can run 5 guys out for a pass simultaneously - nobody is worth more than $15 M
hire 5 receivers at $6 Mil quality level and you can win a Superbowl

B) Stop over valuing running backs
Alvin Kamara is one of the best all around backs in the NFL (confirmed by any metric)
and the Saints will give him one extension... then move on
and miraculously develop another top 5 running back the following year

C) Overpaying a QB can cripple a team if the QB is not capable of lifting the players around him
Common NFL folk lore is pay your QB... but he needs to be a game changer
Matthew Stafford and Kirk Cousins don't seem to make the players around them better
Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger do tend to elevate their teammates

How do you know...
Every fancy high dollar wide out that leaves Pittsburgh ends up being pretty average elsewhere
Brees does the same thing (see Willie Snead)

Or, you know, it's a bargaining tactic. Hoping to end up closer to $34 million.

I'm OK with that too. Anything that puts his salary rank above his QBR rank is fine by me.

I agree but it's also easier to make those $6M receivers look good when Tom Brady is your QB and Bill Belichick is coaching. Dak is a good QB but is he good enough to elevate a group of $6M receivers? Can Jason Garrett and his staff design a game plan and make the necessary in-game adjustments?

Alshon and the group over in Philadelphia looks like a wrecking crew
That's a No. 1 for $15Mil and a buch of guys that average out to $6 mil each

If you want to know how to build a team
look at New England / Philadelphia and San Diego / New Orleans

KC might have fucked themselves... we'll see

NE, Philly & New Orleans - yes. I'm not sure about San Diego. What about the Rams or the Bears?

KC because of Watkins or Clark? Watkins is definitely overpaid. We'll have to see with Clark. That defense needed changes and they're making them. It could blow up or it could work out. There are no sure things.

The NE situation with Brady willing to make less than he's worth is somewhat unique. Teams like Philly and LAR can take shots while they have good QBs on rookie deals. Isn't KC doing something similar with Mahomes?

Philly now has Wentz for 6 years at a very manageable $25M per year - two years from his rookie deal and then 4 years extension. That's Howie magic right there.

Give Dak his $40M! Pay the man!!!

Never gets above $34M. Even drops to $31M in 2022 before ticking back up again the next year. It'll be a bargain going forward. Especially considering Dak will get his $40M hitting next year.

If one of those games is the Super Bowl then it's money well spent. And still cheaper than what Dak's going to steal from the cowboys while he's watching the Eagles in the Super Bowl.
