2020 Baseball Hall of Fame Voting

Post by Gil Dobie »

Looks like Jeter will make it, Larry Walker is looking good in his last year for voting. Schilling, Bonds and Clemens have a chance as 75% is needed with 113 of 412 ballots in.

Current Announced Voting According to Ryan Thibodaux's Baseball Hall of Fame Vote Tracker (as of 12/31/19 at 8:00 PM PST) (113 of approximately 412 ballots [110 publicly announced, 3 anonymously revealed to Ryan Thibodaux & his team], approximately 27.4% of the projected vote, will need at least approximately 309 votes to be elected to the Hall of Fame. Approximately at least 21 votes will be needed to appear on next year's ballot, provided candidate isn't elected or termed off.)[10]

I'll need to find a way to protest if Clemens and Bonds both end up getting in. Being a really great player shouldn't trump actually cheating in and around the course of the game.

I'm fine with Jeter, Walker, and Schilling getting in. Be a shame to tarnish their inductions with bringing in known cheats at the same time.

I could argue that both Bonds and Clemens had HOFish careers before the steroid era. If they get in, I'd be OK with it. Sosa, on the other hand, never.

Larry Walker over Gary Sheffield. WAFJ

The first "Coors Field" HOF'er….dude was a fucking nobody until he started playing in that bandbox.

If we're going to start putting Colorado players in, we should start with Todd Helton.

I think it becomes fairly clear if you compare the careers prior to 1998.

No, it's not clear.

93: Sammy 33/93, Barry 46/123
94: Sammy 25/70, Barry 38/81 (strike-shortened season)
95: Sammy 36/119, Barry 33/104
96: Sammy 40/100, Barry 42/129
97: Sammy 36/119, Barry 40/101
98: Sammy 66/158, Barry 37/124

Disclaimer: I'm not a Cubs, nor a Giants fan (and I despise Bonds and Sosa)….but I just don't get the differentiation.

Because they aren't worthy.

Anyone with 10 or more years of MLB service automatically gets put on the HOF ballot

So if Schilling gets in, whose Hat does he wear?

Jeter/Walker are no-brainers
Clemens has to be Boston
Bonds would be a HOF just with his Pittsburgh numbers, but the Giants are where he did his HR's

I know, not arguing that. Just found it hilarious how many ex D-Backs there are on the list, and all (except Schilling) polling at or near 0%.

Putting Barry Steroid and Misremember Clemens in the HOF is going to happen at some point. Too bad Baseball couldn't wash their records from the time they used. Hank Aaron and Roger Maris should be the official HR record holders. At least Maris still holds the AL record of 61 in 61.

It doesn't have to happen. They're getting close to the time limit of being on the ballot, just let them expire and them let the veterans committee handle it. There's no equivalent for the amount of cheating they did, and there's no doubt that they did cheat. No sense in rewarding it.

Schilling would be a tough one - he might go in without a specific one (a blank one). He spent the longest time in Philly and is still active around here, and won an NLCS here. He won WS titles in Arizona and Boston but both weren't necessarily long tenures. He has the bloody sock thing from Boston but I think he also moved out of the area post career because he didn't care for the Boston area later in life.

He is a tough one. Longer tenure in PHIL, but reputation was made in Arizona and Boston - his performance especially in the 2001 WS was one for the ages. He grew up in Arizona, and has talked about running for Congress from here, but his wife's skin cancers make living in AZ tough.

Look at things like AS games, MVP awards, Gold Gloves, Silver Slugger awards. That will tell you who was considered the better player of the era.

There is not much difference between Schilling and Pettitte.

Side Note: Every pitcher that had more than 100 wins than losses made the HoF.

the guy won 19 post season games
That's going to stand for 75 years

Honestly, I'm on the fence regarding Pettitte. I just don't think Schilling deserves much more consideration than Pettitte.

For me it's simple...
if you hold a record regarding wins in a 150 year old sport - you go to the HoF

He is the all-time leader in post season victories with 19
and is 7-1 in ALCS play
and has 6 series clinching victories which is also a record

Jeezus Titty Fucking Christ !!!
what is the HoF for if that guy isn't in there ?

I don't really care, but propping up a record for post season wins for 150 years when for the first 100 years there was only one best of 7 requires an awfully large asterisk IMO.

strong point
it's kinda the inverse argument about Bigfoot
before everybody had a phone on their camera - there were a lot of sightings - now days - not so much

Before their were 3 rounds of playoffs
a playoff win had more significant value

agreed...
