NFL 2020 Season

With some big news coming out, I figured it was time to start this thread.

Panthers give Cam Newton permission to seek trade
The Panthers on Tuesday gave quarterback Cam Newton permission to seek a trade. General manager Marty Hurney met with Newton and his representation to discuss the plan, signaling the end of a nine-year run in Carolina.
I said this would happen last season and many people got very upset with me that I would have the gall to suggest it.

Tom Brady says goodbye to Patriots
Tom Brady said goodbye to the New England Patriots in a series of posts on Instagram on Tuesday, ending his 20-year run with the only NFL team he has ever known.

Brady did not say which team he will sign with for the 2020 season, but he did indicate he was leaving.

Eagles move on from Malcolm Jenkins. He's long in the tooth, but still a big hole to fill. He was really the soul of the defense the past three seasons.

My greatest MJ memory:

Bill OBrien has lost his marbles...
He trades two first-round picks for OT Laremy Tunsil and 40 catch a year wideout Kenny Stills

then trades Hopkins and a 4th round pick
for David Johnson and a 2nd round pick

Johnson is still owed $10.2 million
Hopkins is under contract for 3 more years for $36 Mil
None of this makes any sense ..?

Johnson couldn't get a $10 mil a year deal from any team in the NFL right now - presently he's $7 or $8 mil over paid
Hopinks is under contract for three more seasons at below market value

:dunce:

see: Todd Gurley

1) The Rams running back currently has four years left on an extension that he signed in 2018 (4 fucking years!!)
2) Cap hits of $17.25 million in 2020
3) $13.2 million in 2021
4) $14.2 million in 2022
5) $12.4 million in 2023

The Rams foolishly pro-rated his signing bonus over the life of the contract...

Lions trade Darius Slay to Philadelphia for 3rd and 5th round draft picks. I think the article said Slay will make $50 million over 3 years from the Eagles.

Just getting rid of Johnsons contract alone was huge for the Cardinals
never mind getting a top 5 wideout

I like the trade for the Eagles. Slay is far and beyond better than anything they have currently, and I like him better than the cowboy CB who went to Miami.

It might work out for both teams. Detroit needs lots of help in numerous places, and they now have either 8 or 9 picks out of the first 100 or so. Apparently they are also looking to move down from the #3 pick.

They're still the Lions though, so essentially they will suck.

Look at the difference between the Hopkins and Diggs trades. What is O'Brien on?

Hopinks career (7 seasons)

average 1228 yards a season
averages 13.6 yards a catch

Diggs Career (5 seasons)
average 73 catches a season
averages 924 yards a season
averages 12.7 yards a catch

Agreed, the Hopkins trade was so bad that if a similar deal was offered in a fantasy football league it would've been vetoed by the rest of the league fo being so unbalanced.

So the Eagles have their shutdown corner. Now they just need an entire set of starting wide receivers, an entire set of starting linebackers, a starting left tackle, and a starting defensive end with some rushing skill and they'll be all set!

Well, an entire starting set of linebackers in this age of a 4-3 defense that's almost always in nickel or more means just two linebackers, and ideally pass defending linebackers (i.e. they can be safeties).

And they do have a left tackle, that's why they drafted Dillard with a 1st round draft pick in last year's draft. He can't play right tackle for some reason, but he can play left tackle which is where they need him.

No doubt about the receivers, they need 2 guys at a minimum so that's why they'll spend a first round pick on that in this draft. Can't draft another Agholor in that spot. And they can certainly grab another in FA right now. Perriman or Anderson would be a nice get.

It would be great if they could find a way to swing a trade for the Ngakoue guy from Jacksonville - that would give us the defensive end we need.

I like McCoy and Clinton-Dix.

Not a big fan of losing some of the guys we did but the money just wasn't there.

He's got Guillain-Barré syndrome, that's serious stuff, especially for a 29 year old. Even for a cowboy, you don't wish that stuff on anyone. :ohno:

Changing subjects abruptly to the Birds...

Would you trade the 1st rounder (#21) for Ngakoue? Or save it for a rookie WR?

Howie's track record on WR's isn't good.

I say you put together the best DL in the NFL and ink a FA WR. Of course, that's a much more expensive route than just drafting a WR and hoping he's not the next JJ Arcega-Whiteside.

I could be talked into getting Ngakoue - the top 3 WR's are not going to be there at #21, and there's a chance the 4th best guy (Jefferson) won't be there either. I'm not excited about either the WR from Arizona St or Colorado and we know Howie's track record with picking Big 12 WR's anyway. If it's likely that a top 4 WR isn't there at #21 I'd rather trade the pick for Ngakoue - might even be able to snag a draft pick later in the draft as part of it too.

Problem is the money. Ngakoue is franchised tagged this year so you need to resign him, and the Eagles are already projected to be over the cap for 2021 as they stand right now. Somehow have to figure out the Alshon Jeffery mess, because he's got an $18M cap hit in 2021. Heck, there's talk that Ertz isn't happy (he didn't do a new contract) so you might have to move on from him and his $12M cap hit. And I don't think any of this takes into account their draft picks for this year yet. Howie's gotta get creative with the money somehow.

Ertz is a lot less indispensable since Goedert learned to catch halfway through last season.

I'd re-sign Zach Ertz and Goedert both before I spent a nickel on Alshon Jeffery and his 45 catches
You can control a game with 2 tight ends that can both catch

The kind of catches Alshon gives you can be replaced easily
the kind of catches Ertz and Goedert give you - not so much

Heck teams try to cover Goedert with a linebacker 50% of the time
He forces a Defense to make hard decisions

Just my 2 cents

The Eagles are done with Jeffrey after the "anonymous" player comments to ESPN last season. He's old news. It's just a matter of trying to mitigate the financial obligations to him.
