Payton burns a draft pick on Mississippi State QB/WR Tommy Stevens,a guy who won't make the team just to spite the Panthers, who desperately wanted him. This is a guy who could be Taysom Hill 2.0. His continued presence on the team looks shaky given a Brees contract extension, a Hill mega-contract, and the signing of Jameis Winston as a backup.
Personally, I think the guy stays and Winston gets cut or traded. But I could see the Saints keeping Hill and Stevens, officially as WRs, and labeling Winston #2 (as Teddy Bridgewater was last year), and perhaps even keeping a classic dropback QB as an official #3 (i.e. the "clipboard holder"), what most would consider a "camp arm" who would normally get cut. This might be an issue in terms of practice reps, but it could be a godsend if the OL fails to perform and there's a rash of injuries at QB.
