2021 Sacramento Sirens/Women's Football Thread

Post by SuperHornet »

This is going to be a LONG season for the Sirens. A last-minute glitch forced the Sirens to move their game from easy-to-reach Sacramento (CA)-Kennedy HS to way-out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere Wheatland (CA) Union HS. The Sirens suited something like 19 players, about 3/4 of which were playing their first game ever, AND they had to contend with the 2019 defending Women's Football Alliance Division 3 National Champion Nevada Storm. It showed. The Storm won 58-6, and it wasn't even that close.

The small roster forced the Sirens to play one-platoon football. (In other words, everyone except QB Jessica Khalil, a converted linebacker, played both ways.) The entire line consisted of rookies, and they were standing straight up at the snap, and you can imagine the holes that resulted against a championship-caliber squad. Officiating was decent, though there was ONE shot I thought MIGHT have been targeting, though it wasn't called, and it wasn't so blatant that one could didactically declare an officiating boner. The Sirens couldn't block for either the backs OR in pass pro, and Khalil took a LOT of abuse on the night. Two bright spots, though were WR Svetlana Stepanchuk, a holdover from the Sirens' glory era in the mid-2000s, and newcomer WR Brie Barry. Both Barry and Stepanchuk were pulling wobbly passes launched by a harried Khalil out of the air when they weren't picked or allowed to fall incomplete, and both were doing about as well as anybody in breaking tackles. Barry went 50+ yards on a jet sweep (or something similar to that) for the Sirens only score. The PAT went UNDER the crossbar. Surprisingly, the Sirens crossed up the Storm at that point with a surprise onside kick, but recovering it did no good as Khalil promptly threw a pick.

Both teams had issues with cramps, and both were using time outs early and often. (I don't think I've EVER seen the first quarter end with BOTH teams down to one time out for the half.)

Next outing: Sirens at Cali War (formerly the California War Angels) in Los Angeles.

In addition to running into a buzzsaw in a national-contending squad in Cali War, the D-III Sacramento Sirens ALSO had to deal with Cali War's big mid-week signing: Sami Grisafe, the first woman to throw for 10,000 yards and the first girl to start a California Interscholastic Federation game at quarterback. The results were predictable: Cali War won in a landslide.

@ OKC Lady Force d. Rocky Mountain Thunderkatz 61-0
@ Mile High Blaze d. Sin City Trojans 12-6

Playoffs 26 JUN 21:

The pairings are somewhat geographically determined, and some teams with losing records are in. I wonder what happened to the Portland Fighting Shockwave (2-3), who were passed over in favor of Sin City Trojans (1-4). And the home field determinations don't always make sense here, unless there was some sort of "independent" factor like a selection committee or an issue with one team in terms of securing a home field (note an undefeated team having to go on the road to a team with a losing record in D-I, and an undefeated team going on the road to a one-loss team in D-III).

Division I:

Dallas Elite Mustangs (3-3) at Cali War (5-1)
Arlington Impact (4-2) at Minnesota Vixen (5-0)
Tampa Bay Inferno (5-0) at D.C. Divas (1-3)

Capital City Savages (4-2) at New York Knockout (4-0)

Just got word that Cali War will advance in the WFA Division I playoffs via forfeit: the Dallas Elite Mustangs apparently have too many injuries to field a team for the playoff trip to Los Angeles. Sami Grisafe gets a week off, I guess....

WFA National Championship:
At Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, Canton, OH

23 JUL:

1500 Division III National Championship
Derby City Dynamite (7-1) d. Arizona Outkast (7-2) 30-20

1800 Division II National Championship
Nevada Storm (8-0) d. Detroit Dark Angels (5-4) 42-18

From the info I've been given, Derby City will move up to D-II next year, and Nevada will move up to D-I. This is great news, as certain Storm players moved as free agents this season from my Sacramento Sirens after their season ended abruptly two or three games in. Detroit has historically been one of the better franchises in women's football, so this is a great achievement for the Storm.

24 JUL:

1300 Xenith All-America Game
1800 Division I National Championship
Boston Renegades (6-0) vs. Minnesota Vixen (7-0)

Both teams in the D-I National Championship have been historically very good. Boston's QB has thrown for more than 20,000 yards, which is now the figure du jour for women's football (though I'm not sure where Chicago's Sami Grisafe, Pittsburgh's Lisa Horton, or even Kansas City's Katie Sowers are on the list anymore; they were the first two to 10,000 yards). Boston also has the notoriety of having hitched a ride to the Championship on the Patriots' private jet. That's going to engender some jealousy, as one can hardly expect that the Vikings would do the same for the Vixen. That said, I'm predicting the Renegades tonight in a close one....

This is makes for Back-to-Back-to-Back championships for the Renegades and legendary quarterback Allison Cahill. She was 21 of 34 for 218 yards and 3 TDs, contributing another TD on the ground, leading to MVP honors. Minnesota was led by RB Grace Cooper, who served up 192 yards and four TDs on 18 rushes.
