Two constant themes this weekend: leaky O'Lines and sparse attendance. My best guess at the attendance problem: the continued podding concept is preventing identified cities from developing an affiliation with their team. Pittsburgh isn't going to a "home game" in Ohio. There's also some poor officiating. New Orleans QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson was the victim of a Bayley-to-Belly suplex in the first quarter, but no flag. There were also issues with his helmet speaker early. That shouldn't even be a problem because quarterbacks should be calling their own plays, anyway. This problem also developed in an early procedural time out to avoid a delay of game on a punt. If the quarterback was punting as he should, that wouldn't be an issue, either....

Memphis had a decent shot today, but couldn't make an opening KOR for a TD stand up because they didn't protect the passer.
Highlights of Sunday: Hornets QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson clinches a playoff berth. A Michigan special teamer almost single-handedly killed Philadelphia's playoff chances with two KORs for TD and a blocked punt. Also, the Michigan RB who got the game-sealing first down had a binky in his mouth. ROFL....

The North Division Championship was decided by bad rules and incompetent officiating. Playoff overtimes ought to be a standard extra period that becomes sudden death after each team has had a possession. The bogus USFL rules provide for a bloody two-point shootout. This isn't soccer, folks! During the first "inning," (yes, that's what the idiot referee called it), the Michigan running back was ruled to have broken the plane before fumbling; the fumble was recovered by a wide receiver. Mike Pereira stuck his nose into it, though, ruling that the back had fumbled BEFORE he broke the plane, and that under "overtime" rules, that brought the ball back to the spot of the fumble, which made it no good. During the second "inning, the zebras ruled that Hornet WR Cole Hikutini had jumped while a running back was in motion, which was a complete lie. The ball was moved back, and the pass was deflected away, ending the game. Stolen by the incompetent officials and bogus rules. SMH....
Now it's up to McLeod Bethel-Thompson to keep up Hornet hopes for a championship tomorrow....
Scratch that. Remember my officiating complaints last night? None of those problems tonight. Just a good old fashioned beat-down. One of the best defenses in the league failed, as did the offensive line. MBT didn't quit in what could be his last game, and almost came back from a 47-7 deficit, getting a touchdown and the first successful 3-point conversion of the USFL season and a successful 4th and 12 (replacing the onside kick), and got bailed out on a 4th down with a PI call that gave NOLA 1st and goal. Then it all came crashing down with bad play-calling and bad execution. Birmingham QB Alex McGough looked like Patrick Mahomes in single-handedly winning this game, going from down 7-3 to up 47-7. McGough finished the game wearing a WWE championship belt. Birmingham won 47-22.
So next week, it's the expected MVP McGhough against the top total and scoring defense in the Pittsburgh Maulers. That'll be an interesting game.
