US ready for Netherlands rematch at Women's World Cup 2023
From the moment the draw for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup came out last October, there was one match among the group stage games that stood out: The U.S. vs. the Netherlands.

Re: Women's World Cup
It is what it is. The days of the US simply being able to out-athlete other nations in women's soccer are probably over. Now that professional clubs in Europe are putting real money into women's soccer our advantage of actually valuing women's sports compared to how other countries value them is getting smaller. We're still pretty good though.Vidav wrote: ↑Thu Jul 27, 2023 7:47 amDisappointing match.UNI88 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 26, 2023 3:48 pm USA vs the Netherlands tonight!

The US looked flat in the first half. The Horan vs Van de Donk theatrics seemed to fire them up and led to Horan's goal.

Re: Women's World Cup
I'm sorry. Somebody broke in and stole my laptop while I was camping last week.
I just gotta say that the officiating has been horrendous. The zebras tried to hand this morning's FRA-BRA match to Brazil on a silver platter. They missed a clear BRA red card in the first half and let go two clear FRA penalty kicks that SHOULD have made the score 3-0 in favor of FRA by the time the best player in the world scored in the 11th minute off an incredible header. All match long, they were calling rinky-dink cr@p against FRA and letting obvious cr@p that should have been called against BRA go. Fortunately, Renard scored in the second half to seal the win.
Somehow, I missed the removal of Eugenie Le Sommer late in the second half while I was making my weekend breakfast mess. I wonder what was going through the coach's mind when THAT happened.

US ties Portugal to advance.
Just the 2nd time in 9 World Cups that the women haven't won their group.
They better remove their heads from their rectums if they want to win this thing.

Re: Women's World Cup
They're starting to look like the US men in some regard - they don't have a lot of creativity in the offensive end, especially in the box, to actually score. They have a lot of really good players, just not a lot of really good goal scorers.

A lot of angst over Carly Lloyd calling the US players out over this.

They're not used to criticism, they don't like it. They're not playing well, especially on the offensive end. The criticism is warranted.SuperHornet wrote: ↑Tue Aug 01, 2023 7:03 pm A lot of angst over Carly Lloyd calling the US players out over this.

Re: Women's World Cup
I was quite surprised this morning to find that my favorite active player was left on the bench today, but then again, France didn't really need her. They beat their opponents to win the group and advance to the Knockout Rounds.

I admit to being a very casual fan so don't know a lot of the tactics and strategies etc but I see a lot of complaining online about the coaching. Not using subs properly and not having the team ready to go.GannonFan wrote: ↑Wed Aug 02, 2023 7:00 amThey're not used to criticism, they don't like it. Re: Women's World Cup
I finally got to see the shootout on FS1 replay. While I've been primarily rooting for France throughout this entire World Cup, as far as I'm concerned, USA got robbed. The officials called next to nothing on obvious SWE fouls, the Ertz YC was completely bogus, and the way they've borrowed the WTA's "technology" is completely wrong; it carries the appearance of a predetermined result animated for our alleged benefit.
On the other hand, USA shot itself in the foot with a game-long failure to break down the SWE defense, overshooting passes, and getting no power on what few shots they had, all of which seemed to go directly to the SWE netminder. The commentators were practically kissing that goaltender's feet, but she didn't have to do anything more than catch weak dribblers coming her way. The substitution pattern by the US coach was horrible, replacing a decent Alex Morgan with Megan Rapinoe, who had NOTHING today. Were Rapinoe to be a sub, she should have replaced someone else. The decision to bring in two subs in the 120th minute was also questionable; one doinked one off the side post. I'm not going to throw any shade on the US goaltender, however; she was incredible all game long, coming out of the box for huge saves, and drilled one during the shootout.
So, it seems as if bad coaching and worse officiating doomed the US. Of course, that's just SH's opinion, which may well be suspect, since I do have a history of getting cussed out by my own goalie for letting in an own goal as a fullback during the one year I played youth soccer....

Re: Women's World Cup
No matter the substitution pattern, their biggest weakness was the inability to have any finishing skill in and around the goal - they just didn't have any real strikers. Heck, they only managed to put 3 up against Vietnam. This just wasn't an offensively talented team and that made them more susceptible to losing, especially losing in a shoot-out. Really good team with a really glaring weakness.

Re: Women's World Cup
I watched 2 matches in this WC and women’s soccer is exactly like the men’s …. Except in slo mo, and they kick the ball at 50% power and it travels half the distance than it does in the men’s games. TBH I think Rapinoe is correct… a couple trans women would probably greatly improve the women’s national team.

Macrio and Swanson 's injuries were huge no doubt. The game was a textbook example of the old wheeze about if the best team always won the game wouldn't need ro be played. Shots on goal 11 to 1 US, and Sweden didn't get their's until the 86th minute.GannonFan wrote: ↑Mon Aug 07, 2023 9:40 am No matter the substitution pattern, their biggest weakness was the inability to have any finishing skill in and around the goal - they just didn't have any real strikers. Re: Women's World Cup
Wow. Swedens goalie was on fire and the US had 11 shots on goal, many of which were way more than weak dribblers, to 1 for Sweden that didn't come until the 86th minute. It didn't seem obvious to you that Sweden's strategy was to hang back on defense and look to catch the US making a mistake they could capitalize on? We played more than well enough to win and reports of our death are greatly exaggerated. The World Cups have always been filled with games where the better team didn't advance.SuperHornet wrote: ↑Sun Aug 06, 2023 6:26 pm I finally got to see the shootout on FS1 replay.
