2024 MLB Season

Another instance of umpire grandstanding took place yesterday (I think) as the son of a HOF umpire who runs an umpiring school threw out the NYY manager for saying naughty things to him that were actually said by a fan in the stands just over the NYY dugout. Now, I can't stand the Yankees, but the umpire's response is classic narcissistic umpire nonsense.

Manager: I didn't say anything.

Umpire: I don't care! You're gone anyway!

After the game, the ump claimed that he tossed Boone because "he's responsible for everything that happens in the dugout." True, but is the manager in control of things that happen IN THE STANDS?!?

SMH....

MLB has a big problem with injuries

Particularly pitchers

Hard throwers chasing velocity are dropping like flies and unfortunately, they are some of the best pitchers in baseball.

Also, the oblique strain is becoming an epidemic

My favorite active pitcher is back. Days after he signed with the independent/partner Eastern League's Long Island Ducks, Dan Straily's contract was purchased by the Chicago Cubs; he's expected to be assigned to AAA Iowa, though that hasn't quite happened yet.

Because a friend of mine was his youth pastor...weird, I know. But if you don't know at this point that Super Hornet is weird, you should.

Gotcha, I don’t really see that as weird but I guess I should take your word for it.

Starting tomorrow, Josh Gibson will replace Ty Cobb as the greatest hitter of all time, move into the #1 spot in career average at .372. Gibson will also move into the top spot for single season average at .466 in 1943. MLB will incorporate Negro League stats tomorrow, changing a few records.

I don’t think there’s any doubt Josh Gibson would’ve been a Hall of Famer if he were allowed to play in the major leagues.

What I’m not sure about is how deep those Negro league pitching staffs were? after the top one or two guys in the rotation, how did the rest of the rotation compare with the guys that were in the major leagues at the time? I don’t know the answer to that question but you would have to assume there was a drop off after the top guys. So basically, when you take a superstar like Josh Gibson and he gets to hit against lesser pitching, he’s gonna have inflated stats when compared with a major leaguer at the time.

But let there be no doubt, it was proven after 1947 the best Negro league players were definitely impact HOF type players at the major league level.

I think it’s a shame that African Americans no longer have that interest in baseball like they did 75 years ago

If you take a good look at that replay of Willie Mays “the catch” at the Polo grounds in the 1954 World Series, those bleachers were full of Black people. Today in Atlanta for example, the city that is like 60% African-American. It’s hard to find a black guy up in the stands.

I've heard the argument about the lower tier of Negro League players not being as good as the lower tier of MLB players. How do we know for sure. Once established in the Majors, we have had black players make the all star games at a higher percent of their demographics. Hard to say for sure. Seamheads has Josh Gibsons average against MLB all star teams at 8 games, batting .313 in 34 plate appearance. Thats against above average players. One barnstorming tour had MLB all stars winning 15 out of 20 games. Still the 5 wins are a big deal.

There us no official count outside of the MLB stats for Negro League games. Seamheads has additional, but not complete stats.

I am in mourning. As a kid, I made a Rose base-running jacket with a marker, which I used to run the base paths in the "back yard" at the Boys and Girls Club, which at the time was housed at the Grape Festival Grounds in Lodi.

That jerk Jim Gray should be banned from TV for all Eternity after the unjust way he Pearl Harbored Rose at the All Star Game....
