Track team is looking good. Former NDSU thrower Peyton Otterdahl is the #3 shot putter on team USA.

Olympics started today, with soccer and rugby getting started. The Argentina/Morocco soccer game was interesting. Morocco led 2-0, Argentina clawed back, and in the 16th (yes, 16 minutes of added time) minute of added time they scored a header to tie it up. This prompted the Moroccan fans to go nuts, throwing water bottles and apparently flares (gotta love French security, letting flares get through) onto the field, causing the match to be suspended for an hour while they clear the stadium. Even more so, during that hour, VAR was able to show that the Argentinian player was offside, negating the goal. Players had to come back to the field, stretch, and get ready to play the last 3 minutes of the game. In some reports, Moroccan fans who stormed the field in protest were throwing firecrackers at the Argentinian players.

On the restart, the ref went through the motions of a VAR check, walked over to a screen, and officially disallowed the goal. At which the Moroccan players celebrated wildly. Mind you, everyone already knew the goal had been disallowed. Game ends with Morocco winning 2-1. Soccer, and the fans of it, especially from other nations, is just a hot mess of crazy.

Naturally, Argentina was ticked off at how the VAR ruling was handed down.

Incidentally, gold medal favorite Canada (on the women's side) suffered something of a setback with the dismissal of an assistant coach and a staffer over the use of a drone to spy on a closed practice for their first opponent. The HC is also taking a self-imposed one-game suspension (against that first opponent). Really dumb, especially considering that Canada was widely expected to win big without even preparing for that game....

Lots of furor over those cardboard beds, which have been videoed back home. At least one reason for those beds is to prevent athletes from going all the way during the games. A bigger issue with the rooms, though, is the intentional lack of A/C, except for those athletes whose home federations (like the US) is privately funding them. Stupid....

Looks like France hired a bad coach. They open up a 3-0 halftime lead last night using subs, only to almost fritter it away with a penalty kick charged to the goalie and bad defense allowing another ten minutes later. They were only saved by a Columbia red card (rather dumb, too). The coach brought in the best player in the world sometime after the 80th minute, way too late to help. France barely got out of that game with all three points. The coach better use all his starters from here on out. SMH....

Got an over the air antenna, so I was able to pick up some of the opening ceremonies.

I must be getting old as I thought it a little boring with the boats and athletes.

Can't wait to see the Road cycling championship. Olympics has always been somewhat of a second tier event in cycling so it usually plays out differently than most events.

You not only get nation vs nation competition, but then throw in professional race team allegiance and you never know who will win.

Just finished watching the Opening Ceremonies on DVR. I was really hoping they'd let Eugenie Le Sommer light the cauldron. No such luck. SMH....

I found the whole chase across Paris with the torch, the boat rides, and the use of a temporary stadium really dumb.

South Sudan defeats Puerto Rico in basketball.

I'd love to go back to French Polynesia to watch the surfing.

Katie Ledecky is a-freaking-mazing. Not only does she win HER race by a ka-zillion miles (and set a new Olympic record in the process), she also makes a little girl's day just by waving at her. Awesome.

The race walk is VERY weird. The judges are about as bad as Angel Hernandez; they REALLY get in your face to issue those weird yellow and red cards. It looks like they think the race is all about them.

That Turkish shooter is awesome. Fifty-one years old and no hearing protection. Glasses that have been described as if he'd bought them at LensCrafters...IF LensCrafters were available in Turkey. Wow....
