The Redskins' kickers are BOTH out, and for exactly the same reason: their wives are in labor. Whodathunk a guy AND his backup would both miss practice for exactly the same reason, and it's something like THAT?!?

Riddle me this: With 4 seconds left and a 4th down, the Chargers ran a route and threw a high pass to run out the clock. Had the pass been botched or the quarterback taken a hit, the Broncos could have won. Why didn't they run out the clock by taking an intentional?
SMH....

So the Chargers just beat the Broncos.

What about the Chargers free kick at the end of the first half? It was the first free kick in the NFL since 1976 ...
"After a fair catch is made or is awarded as the result of fair catch interference, the receiving team has the option of putting the ball in play by a snap or fair catch kick (drop kick or place kick without a tee) from the spot of the catch or succeeding spot after enforcement of any applicable penalties. This includes the 15-yard penalty enforced from the receiving team's 20-yard line as applicable if the fair catch is made or awarded in his end zone from fair catch interference or illegal contact with the receiver after he has made a fair catch."
What's the difference between a free-kick and a field goal?
When a free-kick is being attempted, the defense must line up 10 yards away from the line of scrimmage until the ball is kicked. The kicker also has the option to dropkick the ball rather than kick it from a holder.

Not exactly. It was the first SUCCESSFUL fair catch free kick since 1976. Mark Moseley had a record 74 yard fair catch free kick in 1979 that was the longest attempt on record until 2008.
I first became aware of the rule when my first favorite kicker, Rafael Septien, missed a 53-yard fair catch free kick to end a 17-14 preseason loss to the bloody Oilers 1986.
This has actually gotten more frequent of late, so I have no idea why people keep saying this is an "obscure" rule. After having ZERO attempts in the '90s (in the regular season and playoffs; there WAS a preseason attempt in 1993), there have been six since Y2K.
