Can he go 58?

SAN FRANCISCO -- Ryan Zimmerman has swiftly extended his hitting streak to 30 games, getting a first-inning single in the Washington Nationals' game against the San Francisco Giants.

Zimmerman matched George Brett's 30-game streak in 1980 for the longest by a third baseman since Pete Rose's 44-game streak in 1978, although Rose played two games in left field during his famed streak.

Zimmerman singled off Matt Cain on Tuesday night, the 14th time he's had a hit in his first at-bat during the streak. He had a first-inning single off Randy Johnson on Monday before going 4 for 5 with two homers.

The streak is the fourth-longest in the majors since 2000, matching 30-game streaks by Moises Alou (2007), Willy Taveras (2006) and Albert Pujols (2003).

The crazy thing is, as impressive as 30 games is, it's only a little over halfway to the record.

Already tied for 35th longest.

I witnessed a few games during Luis Gonzales' 30 game hit streak in 1999.

I saw a couple of games during Pete Roses' 44 game hit streak in 1978, including the game at Shea where he set the modern day NL record.

I was also at the game where Rose came up in the 9th with no hits and walked - but the Reds batted around and Rose got a bunt single to keep the streak alive.

Through 7 innings today, Zimmerman is 0-2 with 2 walks. He will get at least 1 more at bat.

Just think of what a dick the pitcher could be and intentionally walk him in his final at bat.

The streak ended today. Zimmerman grounded into a fielders choice in his last at bat in the 9th inning.
