First his wife, and now his mom.

A difficult year for Phil Mickelson has gotten even tougher with the revelation that his mother has breast cancer, less than two months after Mickelson's wife Amy was diagnosed with the disease.

Mary Mickelson is scheduled to have surgery later this week at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, which is the same hospital where Amy Mickelson had surgery last week. Amy Mickelson received waves of support from the golf community, and Mary Mickelson should receive the same. The AP notes that she and Phil's father continue to live in the same San Diego home where they raised their kids, another reminder that for all the praise (and criticism) these guys receive, they have mothers and childhoods just like the rest of us.

Wow, this has been a tough year on Phil and his family. I wish them the best.

I hope he can make it through this. It must be scary.

I'd say the odds of finding one person in this country who's family hasn't been touched by cancer at least once would be pretty far out there. There have been 3 in my immediate family alone. Cancer's a bitch, I wish Phil, his mother, his wife, and his entire family the best.

I've got him beat: three sisters, an aunt (twice) and a cousin. All with breast cancer.

Sorry to hear that, AZ. I lost a grandmother to breast cancer, a grandfather to bladder cancer, and my father has (hopefully) beaten prostate cancer. Also have an aunt who's hopefully beaten breast cancer.
