Twins Tigers Day of Reckoning

Post by Gil Dobie »

It's a great day for a ball game; let's play two!
Ernie Banks

Twins vs Tigers doubleheader today

Blackburn(11-11) & Porcello(14-9) in the first game. Porcello is a little bit more consistant than Blackburn, Tigers win the first game

Duensing (5-1) vs Verlander (17-9) in game 2. Bright young rookie vs seasoned vet. Twins have hit Verlander pretty good, and Duensing has been solid. Going with the Twins in game 2.

Doesn't get any better than this...............

.........then the Swedish Bikini team showed up, without their bikini's

a hell of a game today... Blackburn walked the line for the first five innings... but stayed alive... and Brandon Lyon and his two wild pitches allowing Span to go from first to third in the 10th... he's gonna need a police escort home tonight

Ok, in th nightcap -- bottom of the 5th, bases loaded for Tigers, and Tigers already lead 3-0. Minnesota makes pitching change. Why not go to Joe Nathan and then let him go another 1 or 2 innings after?

When I was a kid, that situation would have always called for the ace of the bullpen -- the "fireman." Modern managers instead bring in their second or third best guy in the bullpen; and hold back the closer for the save chance (which may not even happen).

Here, base hit for Inge and the Tigers go up 5-0. I just don't get this concept that you can never use your best guy unless you are ahead in the 9th.

Inge and Verlander. VCU and ODU. Oil and water. Quite a pair for the Tigers. Go CAA.

Nathan isn't "the stopper" like that... Gardenhire would never use him the way Torre used Rivera... it's the way the Twins do business... Nathan has also proven surprisingly shaky when inheriting a mess... and... he'd already pitched an inning earlier in the day...
