Charlie Davies, a striker for the United States national soccer team, was involved in a one-car accident early Tuesday in suburban Washington, D.C., in which another person was killed, a U.S. Soccer Federation spokesman said.

Davies was in surgery Tuesday afternoon at Washington Hospital Center and in stable condition, U.S. Soccer said in a statement. The extent of his injuries were unknown, but U.S. Soccer spokesman Neil Buethe said they were not life-threatening.

Crazy but DWI was probably involved. Hope he gets better soon.

USSF has said his injuries may be career-threatening:

Combine that with a five hour surgery, it seems likely his legs were at minimum broken. But the GW Parkway is a horrible road in good conditions, never mind at night with chance of alcohol. Thoughts and prayers with the deceased's friends and family.

He is fortunate to be alive!

Davies was out of surgery by 6 p.m., according to Washington Hospital Center Medstar spokeswoman Paula Faria. U.S. Soccer Federation spokesman Neil Buethe earlier said that Davies had been taken in for surgery before noon.

Buethe said Davies' injuries were not life-threatening. He initially said the injuries were "possibly" career-threatening but later clarified the remark.

"At this point, we just don't know the extent of the injuries, so we can't comment on how this affects Charlie's future," Buethe said.

Davies healing and rehabilitation expected to take 6-12 months, and is likely to play again.

The guy is young and has a really bright future ahead. He was a strong part of the US team. Hopefully he recovers and picks up where he left off.

I'm not sure if anyone on here is going to the game tonight (8 PM EST, RFK Stadium, ESPN2), but people are being asked to print this out and hold it up during the ninth minute (8:00-8:59) in honor of Davies:

If you want to send Charlie Davies your well wishes, you can send an e-mail to charliedavies9@yahoo.com. The team will print out all messages and them give to him

Update:
The multiple broken bones in his leg, face and elbow have healed. So has a torn posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, and he has recovered from bladder surgery, which left a foot-long scar on his stomach. He has regained the 15 pounds he lost after enduring six surgeries following the crash, and is days away from undergoing his final surgery associated with the accident, a procedure to remove a bone, plate and screws from his left elbow.
He is expected back at Sochaux to begin training in late February, get into games by April, and play for the US at the World Cup.

Great news for the US if Davies is close to 100% - his speed up front is a difference maker.
