Maine Football Team Trolls Colts On Twitter With Properly Ex

Post by BDKJMU »

BOSTON (CBS) — The question isn’t “How stupid was the Colts’ fake punt attempt?” It’s more like, “How much dumber was that play call than every other call in the history of American football?”

The Colts attempted what will go down as easily the worst attempt at a trick play (or any play) in the history of the NFL Sunday night against the Patriots. Not only did “quarterback” Colt Anderson get tackled immediately, the play wasn’t even legal – it drew an illegal formation penalty because “the whole right side of the line” was off the line of scrimmage. You can hear the referee try not to crack up as he announced the penalty.

Social media is not too forgiving with these sorts of things, and Twitterers absolutely teed off on the Colts after the play. Monday morning, the ridicule hasn’t stopped – and the Maine Black Bears football team has delivered one of the most ruthless burns yet.

Maine defeated James Madison University in 2011 in overtime after running a similar trick play to what the Colts attempted, faking an extra point to go for 2. Only in this case, the “quarterback” was lined up well behind the “center” and had more room to run – and the play succeeded, securing the win for Maine.

So the team jumped on the perfect opportunity to show off their own trickeration with this burn for the Colts on Twitter:

The Colts will surely take this highlight to the film room to figure out how to properly trick opponents.

Except in the Colts case, the ball was never supposed to be snapped.

The formation was legit, but the Dolts screwed up the execution.

It's called The Duck, and it's a variation of the Swinging Gate, though there is usually a flanker stationed near the snapper. The snapper is eligible because he's the EMOL. The QB is SUPPOSED to be in the Shotgun, though. The idea is to count how many defenders deploy to the QB's side. If the defense overloads to the QB, (as in the Dolts' case), the idea is to check to the screen (i.e. throw to the punter in the Dolts' case), and I mean RIGHT NOW because the rush will be immediate. Had the Dolts' had the flanker near the snapper, he would have been available for a post route and the snapper for a wheel route given the two defenders on top of the snapper. One defender or none, and the QB just takes off with the snap. As long as you line up right and the QB reads the defense in this fashion, you're going to get a TON of yards. Yes, you have to have a code word for each of those options, and you have to have your required seven men on the line.

I was first introduced to this in the film room with my fellow quarterbacks at UOP. The guy who explained it all was our fourth string QB and took over as our punter midway through the '95 season when our combo kicker got hurt. He's now the Special Teams Coordinator for the St. Louis Rams. The formation is legit and can go big if executed correctly.

In the Dolts' interpretation, perhaps. But the formation DOES lead to workable scenarios, as the UMAINE footage shows....
