Re: North Charleston Cop charged with murdering unarmed black man
The hate on twitter is insane. On Friday, it was 11-1 to convict. Now, a "majority are undecided." With 11 whites and 1 black man on the jury, people are already calling those 11 people the Klan and other nasty terms.93henfan wrote:If this guy gets off, I'm calling whites and blacks square on the OJ situation.
I'm not saying Slager is innocent, but when you pull over someone for a broken taillight and they run b/c they know there's a warrant issued for them, you have to expect something bad might happen. It was either get arrested for failing to pay child's support OR run from the police and compound your problems. He chose poorly.

Re: North Charleston Cop charged with murdering unarmed black man
I was thinking 2nd degree murder or manslaughter. I don't think it was premeditated, but Slage might have been provoked due to Scott running away and trying to take the taser away. However, Scott was resisting arrest but he wasn't moving very fast. Slager could've tasered him in the back to bring him down. Slager couldn't have caught up, tackled him and tased him.Skjellyfetti wrote:What a load of bullshit. I don't think a murder could be any more cut and dry.
Cop shot him in the back as he ran away. He then planted his taser next to him to make it look like he grabbed it. All on tape.

I think the problem here is that the only choice they are giving the jury is murder one. Under SC law, murder 2 more accurately describes what Slager did.

http://www.postandcourier.com/news/mist ... ea5f8.htmlA mistrial was declared Monday after jurors could not agree on a verdict in the murder case against Michael Slager, the white North Charleston police officer who shot Walter Scott, a black man. The jury had been deliberating for about 22 hours.
It was not immediately clear whether state prosecutors would retry Slager. The 35-year-old former policeman still faces charges in federal court that carry a lifetime of imprisonment.

Re: North Charleston Cop charged with murdering unarmed black man
Amazing that they couldn't come up with a verdict here - it's at least manslaughter, and there's no question about that. This was the case with the cop shooting the guy in the back from like 10 feet as he was running away, correct? No need for deadly force when he applied it, and he should be held accountable for that. An embarrassment that they couldn't get at least manslaughter.Ibanez wrote:The jury has 3 choices: Murder, Manslaughter, Aquittal.CID1990 wrote:I think the problem here is that the only choice they are giving the jury is murder one. A buddy of mine from high school used to work with the Solicitor. I read that the recalcitrant juror didn't want to go with murder but also didn't want to acquit the guy. I'm not sure why his letter to the judge was material if he had the manslaughter option.Ibanez wrote:The jury has 3 choices: Murder, Manslaughter, Aquittal.CID1990 wrote:I think the problem here is that the only choice they are giving the jury is murder one. Re: North Charleston Cop charged with murdering unarmed black man
http://www.postandcourier.com/news/ex-p ... bbf12.htmlFormer North Charleston police officer Michael Slager pleaded guilty Tuesday to violating Walter Scott’s civil rights by shooting the fleeing black man five times — a sudden shift after insisting for two years he had gunned down Scott in self-defense.
Slager reached the agreement with prosecutors a week before a jury was scheduled to be selected for his trial in federal court. Under the "global" plea deal, state authorities promptly dropped a separate state murder charge. Two other federal counts of lying to investigators and using a firearm in a violent crime also will be dismissed.
Meanwhile, what's the penalty: Anything from 0-Life.
The charge — deprivation of rights under the color of law, carries as little as no prison time and as much as life behind bars.

Life should be the sentence. Dude should have looked around for people with cell phones first. Always do a camera sweep before shooting a guy in the back. Always.

I'm not defending Slagers actions but if Scott hadn't:93henfan wrote:Life should be the sentence. Dude should have looked around for people with cell phones first. Always do a camera sweep before shooting a guy in the back. Always.
1) had a broken tail light
2) had an outstanding warrant
3) ran from the police
4) Tried to take an officers weapon and then use attack with the officer's taser
5) run again
if he could've avoided all 5 of those actions, he might be alive today.
That said, Slager didn't need to shoot him in the back. He could've caught up with him, tackled him, or just let him go. Instead, he shoots a man in the back, misses the birth of his child and her first 2 years of life and now faces more jail time. Think McFly! Think!

Re: North Charleston Cop charged with murdering unarmed black man
I think we're going to see a middling sentence.
He's pleading guilty to the civil rights charge of excessive force leading to death. All other charges will be dropped and SC will drop any retrials.
I think Slager's lawyers leveraged the hung jury in the SC trial suggesting to the US atty that something similar could happen with the more severe Fed charges.
Taking that into consideration I think he's going to see 10 or more years (maybe closer to 10 than 20) and a fine.

A Taser, which can send an electrical jolt four times hotter than the sun, could have burned North Charleston patrolman Michael Slager’s shirt, or was it a meteor?
Gunshot residue on Walter Scott’s right hand could indicate that he grabbed Slager’s gun before the policeman shot him to death, or did it get there when the officer handcuffed him after the shooting?
Those were the kind of questions posed in front of jurors who on Monday, the 14th day of Slager's murder trial, started seeing evidence that his defense team says portrays the shooting as justified. The key piece: Two defense witnesses — a state investigator and a private expert — said they knew of nothing but a Taser that could have caused the burn marks on Slager's uniform.

Re: North Charleston Cop charged with murdering unarmed black man
Sure, but you're right, he didn't have to shoot this guy in the back. It takes a moment to pull a trigger but that moment forever changed the victim's life (obviously) and the officer's as well. Like you said, you have to think, no matter how hard it is to do it in the moment. He'll do significant time in prison as he should.Ibanez wrote:I'm not defending Slagers actions but if Scott hadn't:93henfan wrote:Life should be the sentence. Wrong, as usual. Civil Rights ARE a Federal Matter. States have shown that they can not guarantee the civil rights of their citizens, and the Federal Government has had to intervene to ensure that.
