Re: Washington Scablands
That's it. I am flipping to the other side. I am now a Climate Kook as I believe this is a clear example of how man has changed the climate for the worse. In the middle of eastern Washington, in a desert that gets less than eight inches of rain a year, stands what was once the largest waterfall in the world. It is three miles wide and 400 feet high—ten times the size of Niagara Falls—with plunge pools at its base suggesting the erosive power of an immense flow of water. Today there is not so much as a trickle running over the cataract’s lip. It is completely dry.

I know, its really easy to blame man for glaciers receding 13000 years ago. We are so obviously the cause of the earth getting warmer!

Imagine a wall of water 900 feet high racing across the land at 70 miles an hour, so powerful it had boulders the size of VW bugs suspended in its sediment load.
Greatest cataclysmic natural event in modern history. And the the new theory is that it was triggered by a significant meteor strike in North America that flash melted the glaciers, releasing the water, that changed the entire global climate for at least the next few months, suggesting the coincidence of biblical flood narratives that span multiple ancient cultures.
Semi advanced civilizations that predate our earliest hypotheses could have been wiped off the face of the earth.

Re: Washington Scablands
Cataclysmic events have shaped our history - both the earth 's history and human history as well.
Nat Geo's most recent issue has an excellent feature on the Vikings. They literally revolutionized everything in medieval Europe- commerce, warfare, cultural exchange, our understanding of the known world at the time, etc.
And it is now widely accepted that if not for an event that spewed a large amount of dust into the atmosphere and greatly lowered global temperatures sometime around 509-700 AD, the Viking literally never may have happened.
Scandinavia was very temperate prior to this climate event, but when it got cold, half the area was uninhabitable; hundreds of thousands died of various causes. When things warmed back up, what was left of the Scandinavian tribes scrambled to reoccupy old lands, and they became very warlike and factionalized as a result. Their outward expansion was a way of keeping peace at home.

Every now and then they do a feature not entirely related to melting glaciers and actually entice me to continue my subscription.

As someone who is roughly 3/4 Scandinavian (1/2 Norwegian and approx 1/4 Danish) I love to read about Vikings. The impact of the environment on the Vikings and their impact on the world were both tremendous.

From Canada to Afghanistan. I don't think they were as organized or centrally governed as the Mongols, Persians, or Romans, but that's still an impressive chunk of land to influence.
And yes, CID, the effect of cataclysmic events was an interesting side bar. I was thinking "Winter is coming" right as they were mentioning Game of Thrones.
