I think you start with a national gun registry to start. We all have to register our cars & pay insurance right, why should guns be any different. Cigarettes & alcohol have "sin taxes", add guns to it as well. Nobody knows where all the guns in this country are, and if you want to have a gun (which I am not opposed too), then you need to be responsible for the guns you own as well. If you're going to sell your gun it should be similar to exchanging the title on a car. Guns are too easy to get and it's an issue no one wants to confront, until it hits too close to home. Do you have to wait until someone in your family gets killed by gun violence until it matters to you? Or should we wait a week to a month & Spandos will tell us it's all a hoax.

I'm not saying I have all the answers, but I am saying that until you start having a conversation about the problem it's only going to get worse. 89, you and 93 or anyone that was living in the DC Beltway area a decade or so ago should have more appreciation for this when the sniper was shooting random people for what a few weeks....

You would have a lot less legal gun owners if they had to pay a tax on having a gun. People with large collections would be taxed out of collecting guns. Would this take the gun away from the mass shooter? How do we protect people that are gathered in groups?

Always comes up so here we go again. You can see an effort to look at gun ownership rates and gun homicide rates at https://www.theguardian.com/news/databl ... world-list. You can click on the "Get the Data" link to see a table at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... edit#gid=0.

You can do a little math in order to calculate total homicide rate. And what happens when you do that is that you actually get a NEGATIVE correlation between gun ownership rate and total homicide rate. Not a significant negative correlation. It's r = -0.138 with p = 0.14. But there is certainly NO association such that higher gun ownership rate means higher homicide rate.

Here's another interesting observation:

The top 16 listed jurisdictions in terms of gun ownership rate are all below average in terms of homicide rate. That includes the United States. It also includes Northern Ireland, Greece, New Zealand, Macedonia, Germany, Austria, Canada, France, Norway, Sweden, Uruguay, Cyprus, Serbia, Finland, and Switzerland.

That's not to say that shows that guns aren't a factor. Guns are efficient tools. But it's pretty obvious that the prevalence of guns is nowhere near the most important factor.

Texas DPS and FBI just had a news conference...some interesting items...

The shooter had three wounds...including his self-administered one...that means the civilian who engaged him hit him twice...

As the shooter drove away, he called his father and told him what happened and that he did not think he would survive...

I saw a guy being interviewed who said the civilian noted the body armor and thought he needed to hit the guy in the side between the plates. Then he opined that the civilian involved is "the best shot in the county." I'm sure that's subject to question. But apparently the guy had a reputation for being a good shot.

This one is a quandary for libs. They can't do much with it because it doesn't fit their narrative:

1. Crime committed by prohibited owner/purchaser (dishonorable discharge from US military; also domestic abuser). This shows that more stringent gun laws are easily circumvented by criminals.
2. Crime spree ended by legal CCW carrier. This shows that good guys with guns do stop bad guys with guns.
3. If CCW wasn't prohibited in churches, this may have been stopped even sooner.

In addition, this was committed in a red state and against Christian, conservative, white people. This doesn't push any hot buttons for liberals. They can't play identity politics very well with it. They'd prefer that blacks, gays, etc be targeted so they can whip up more populist leftist frenzy.

Poor libs, first the worst mass shooting victimizes country music fans, then the follow-up victimizes Southern Baptists.

Overheard in the Feinstein offices: "Quick, order up another black church shooting and a gay nightclub massacre! We're losing the initiative!!"
