Predictions:
Final Four at Homestead: Truex, Kyle Busch, Larson....and Elliott.
Truex, Larson, and Busch were the 3 most dominant cars last regular season. Larson inexplicably collapsed in the playoffs. Elliott in his sopmore season was the best Hendricks driver, in the playoffs had 7 top 10s, 3 2nds, made the final 8, finished 5th in the points, & would have made Homestead if not wrecked by Hamlin in the closing laps at Martinsville..
Champion: Larson- he is awesome at Homestead.

Harvick would be an obvious choice to make the Final 4- he and Kyle Busch are the only 2 drivers to make it 3 of the last 4 seasons under the current format. The only other drivers to make it more than once are Johnson, Truex & Logano all twice.
Johnson would be a popular pick. He did make the Final 8 last year (barely), but only finished 10th in points, as the new stage racing format wasn't good for him last year.

Rookie of the year: Basically comes down to William Byron driving the #24 and Darryl Bubba Wallace, driving the famous #43. Considering Byron the last 3 seasons has been rookie of the year in the K&N Pro Series East, trucks, & Xfinity, winning last years Xfinity championship to boot, I predict Byron becomes the 2nd driver after Eric Jones to go rookie of the year 3 straight seasons trucks/Xfinity/Cup.

Gets their 1st wins: Elliott (multiple) and Jones, last year's rookie of the year.

Chevy starts off slow with the new Camaro, but turns it on the 2nd half of the season, similar to what Toyota did with the new Camry last year..

Sheesh has NASCAR made itself unwatchable. Too many commercials. Stage racing. Commercials. Two hours pre-pre-race show, before the hour pre-race show, before the race broadcast itself which has another 30 minute pre-race before the green flag drops. Commercials. More new rules and penalties. Commercials.

Thank God F1 starts in a month.

You heard it here 1st. She won't finish in the top 30, and likely won't even finish the race.

Wreck at end stage 1 Blaney and Stenhouse that it was lap 59 not 199. Way too aggressive on the blocking for that early.

Wreck late stage 2 think was more Elliot’s fault than Keselowski. Elliott was late on the block..And before anyone says it wasn’t Danica’s fault she got wrecked, she was between the 11 and 88, both of whom held it down and avoided the wreck. She lost it and slid right up into it..

Austin Dillon wrecks a blocking Aric Almirola to win the Daytona 500.

I thought Danica Patrick's old car was going to win its first race without her up until then.

I introduced two buddies to NASCAR today and they loved it. One's a Road Rally fan and the other never gave a crap about racing or cars, but they were both hollering by the end of it.

Daytona never fails to impress.

Just tell them these are the 12 races, there are no others:
2/18 Daytona 500
3/25 Martinsville
4/29 Talladega
6/24 Sonoma
7/7 Daytona (Saturday night)
8/5 Watkins Glen
8/18 Bristol (Sat night, way better atmosphere than Spring Sunday race)
9/2 Darlington
9/30 Charlotte Roval (something new)
10/14 Talladega
10/28 Martinsville
11/18 Homestead (Championship)

I was just getting it down to 12 races by including the 4 superspeedway, 3 of the 4 1/2 mile+short track races (both Martinsville, 1 of 2 Bristol), the 3 roadcourse (including the new part oval/part roadcourse Charlotte), the Southern 500 throwback at the egg shaped Darlington, and the Homestead championship. Next inline IMHOP would be the Dover & Richmond playoff races. Between the 3 one mile tracks I'd pick Dover over the pretty flat Loudon & PHX sister tracks. Richmond is at least 3/4 mile short track, but from my understanding racing not as good as it used to be. If had to pick a 1.5 mile track (there are 10 races at 7 1.5 mile tracks) outside of the Homestead championship race would Atlanta (until they repave it).

Other than the walkway over the track (really distracting) and the caricature of the monster, there's nothing memorable about it. As a former run of the mill NASCAR watcher, my favorites to watch were: Daytona, Talladega, Martinsville, Bristol, Charlotte (night)... that's about it. The rest I'd watch if nothing else were on.

Atlanta lucky if 25% attendance as the cars rolled out of the pits yesterday, and it didn't fill in any more than that. This is the prime seating area around the start/finish line, not the corners, which were completely empty. Temps were in the 60s and rain had passed. Oof:

Yeah, that's bad, but in fairness I imagine alot of people didn't come because of the pessimistic weather forecast.
SB nation 8 AM yesterday morning:
Image
"Odds of starting the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series Folds of Honor Quiktrip 500 are around 25 percent.

Odds of an official race - 15 to 25 percent

Odds of a full completed race on Sunday < 15%..."
https://www.sbnation.com/nascar/2018/2/ ... her-nascar
They had pushed the start time up 1 hr, then had a 2 1/2 hr rain delay from that. Don't get me wrong- they could have been calling for 75 & sunny the whole day & likely would have been half full at best...

Anyway, Harvick gets his 2nd win at ATL. The 1st came 17 years ago, when Harvick replaced Dale Earnhardt at RCR, 3 weeks after Earnhardt was killed at Daytona.

5th ATL race in a row Harvick has led the most laps, 900+ total in those 5 races, but 1st of the 5 he won. Always something happened before. Harvick also dominated the Xfinity race. He's ridiculous there- can drive that track like no one else can, similar to his dominance at PHX.

Pretty boring race in Vegas this afternoon; Harvick killed the field all day for his 2nd straight win.

Logano looking good though with three straight Top 10 finishes to start the season.

Chase Elliott and Kurt Busch were both running top 10 when Busch lost it and took out Elliott.
1. Kevin Harvick
2. Kyle Busch
3. Kyle Larson
4. Martin Truex Jr.
5. Ryan Blaney
6. Brad Keselowski
7. Joey Logano
8. Erik Jones
9. Paul Menard
10. Aric Almirola
11. Ryan Newman
12. Jimmie Johnson
13. Austin Dillon
14. Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
15. Chris Buescher
16. Alex Bowman
17. Denny Hamlin
18. Clint Bowyer
19. Kasey Kahne
20. Trevor Bayne
21. Darrrell Wallace Jr.
22. Matt DiBenedetto
23. David Ragan
24. Ty Dillon
25. Cole Custer
26. Daniel Suarez
27. William Byron
28. Cole Whitt
29. Ross Chastain
30. AJ Allmendinger
31. Jeffrey Earnhardt
32. Joey Gase
33. Gray Gaulding
34. Chase Elliott
35. Kurt Busch
36. Jamie McMurray
37. Michael McDowell

I wasn't surprised by Harvick's dominance at ATL (one of his 2 best tracks along with PHX). Was surprised by his dominance Vegas today. Led 215 of 267 laps, won both stages and the race). Similar to the dominance Truex had last year in leading the most laps, winning both stages & the race. Now with PHX coming up, where Harvick has won 5 of the last 11, it could be 3 in a row. Harvick at PHX since 2012:
12' 2nd, won
13' 13th, won
14' won, won
15' won, 2nd
16' won, 4th
17' 6th, 5th.

Nice crowd at the track today, which was encouraging. Stated capacity of Vegas is 115K. I'm guessing 100k were there at least. Only a few small empty patches in the corners.

By contrast, Dover has reduced its seating capacity from the 140K it used to sell out regularly down to 85k, and they're lucky to get 50K on a good day, with massive empty patches and advertising tarps placed over several entire sections, even after ripping out Turn 2 and 3 seating.

I'm foregoing Dover for Richmond again, although I'd still like to check out a race there sometime (perhaps as soon as the playoffs). It does suck that NASCAR's viewership and ticket sales are on the decline, but that's also the case with almost any other sport. I do think as a whole, it still does the best job in creating a festive family atmosphere, but it's gotten a bit pricey to actually experience that atmosphere.

My decent seats at the Richmond Raceway were $120 with another $30 for a scanner rental. And even then, there's no amenities, I might get rained on, I can't access most of the pre-race festivities unless I pay $50, and I can't get a tailgating spot unless I fork up another $50.

Lol at NASCAR decided to not allow teams this year to use their own pit guns and instead going with pit guns issued by NASCAR. Last week at ATL the teams of Harvick, Truex, Bowman, and Kyle Busch had issues with them. Cole Pearn to NBC: “They’re pieces of shit."

Today at Vegas on virtually every pit stop there was a team with an issue with their NASCAR issued pit guns.. :ohno:
