Is Sagan complaining about Beavis and Butthead and Dumb and Dumber?
That's a bit "get-off-my-lawn-" to me.
He sounds bitter because those things are more watched than Cosmos, which you can really only have so many episodes before it gets repetitive.

I don't post politics on facebook, but they have me listed as:
Conservative - People in the USA who have a somewhat conservative political affiliation.
There is some other info Facebook has about you when you take a look.

I'm honestly kind of surprised you don't like NGT. I mean, I don't think he's one-fourth the physicist Sagan was and I don't think his version of Cosmos is nearly as good, but with his wit and good one-liners and also being unapologetically anti-fundamentalist without really being brazenly anti-God a la Richard Dawkins I would've thought he was your kinda guy.Chizzang wrote:Sagan was a blessing and a gentle soul...CID1990 wrote:

Anyways, I'm not saying Sagan is wrong, but complaining about the movies, TV shows, and books people are taking in is a great way to undermine (in my eyes) the credibility of any critique of modern culture. Believing in your intellectual superiority because you prefer (or pretend to prefer) things written for 16th-century English peasants with far less formal education than your average American today makes you seem ridiculous. Leo Tolstoy was spot on about Shakespeare, BTW, but most people are too afraid to speak honestly because they're too afraid people won't think them sophisticated.

if you read that entire highlighted section and think Sagan is "complaining" about Dumb and Dumber
He's making a spot on point highlighted there above...
and follows with an observation of what people are renting for entertainment
Dumb and Dumber and Bevis and Butthead are products emphasizing American stupidity
where the primary protagonists are borderline retarded
Surly you can see the irony in that..?
As America is slowly dumbing down it begins even making fun of itself as getting dumber
If we knew a meteor was headed for earth and was going to destroy the planet in 24 months
Would you find it funny that all of a sudden the top selling movies
would be comedies about that very same Meteor destroying earth
Would you be able to see the irony..?
