Well, the Croats kicked "cry for me" Argentina's ass today, 3-0.

Except other Croats. There's a Croatian club in Milwaukee that has the same look.

I think that's okay - I mean, they are still Croatian. I was clearly meaning on the international stage of soccer.

Btw, the knockout round of this World Cup can't happen soon enough. With no Italy or Netherlands or even the home side US in this World Cup, there have only been a handful of matches worth watching in the group stage of this tournament. I like club soccer better than international soccer anyway (you lose the anthems but you pick up the quality of play) but even by World Cup standards this has been a dull group stage.

Snob. Serbia vs. Switzerland, to name one, was pretty exciting. And watch for those Mexicans!

I've watched every game. I have no problem with the play.

The Krauts were damned impressive today. They dominated the Swedes while they were a man down and drilled that winning goal in stoppage time. Tomorrow belongs, tomorrow belongs, tomorrow belongs to them.

The Swedish coaches were livid after the game.

But the Swedish chick fans were way hotter than the German chick fans.

Apparently in soccer there's a different threshold for calling a penalty in the box. The ref didn't call this a penalty either, even with that instant replay:

I guess you can just tackle a dude in the box if he doesn't have the ball.

Portugal and Spain both draw in their respective games, meaning Spain finishes at the top of the group, Portugal second. Sets up a nice round of 16 game with Portugal (Ronaldo) taking on Uruguay (Suarez). Spain gets the easier road in the next round with host Russia on tap. Spain also got a better road through the quarterfinals too as they'll see likely Denmark or Croatia while Portugal would be seeing France or Argentina, and then even Brazil next.

Argentina?? They’re 0-2 at this point and need help to advance.

To quote Agent Smith from "The Matrix", "They're not out yet." And if they don't make it then it just makes it more likely for Portugal to face France, which is the bigger obstacle anyway.

That's not true. Argentina is 0-1-1 which is the same as Iceland while Nigeria is 1-1.

If Argentina beats Nigeria, they either finish 2nd or 3rd. If Croatia would also beat or tie Iceland, Argentina would advance. If Iceland would beat Croatia, Argentina would need to win by more than Iceland wins and advance by tiebreaker. That said, I would not bet on Argentina advancing with the way they've played so far especially since Croatia is playing their B team against Iceland.

And with that, Argentina wins 2-1 on a late goal, the Croats knock out Iceland, and Messi and Argentina are through to the knockout stage and have a date with France this weekend. Like I said, they're not out yet.

Perfesser, you have an “I told you so” approach that can be very annoying. In the meantime, I’ll root for France, Croatia, and Uruguay.
