9/11
Where were you? And do you think this country does enough to remember this attack/victims and honor/care fore the first responders?
I was getting ready for work when the first plane hit. My boss called me at home (unusual in those days) and told me to turn on the TV. Sat there watching live coverage as the 2nd plane hit. Being a Naval Reserve Officer there was rumor every reservist was getting activated immediately, so there was lots of angst in our household.
And the answer to the 2nd part is yes & no. I think first responders got fucked in this deal.

Re: 9/11
I was at home when the wife said a plane just flew into the WTC. I watched for a half hour and then played golf and continued to follow on the radio.
Agreed on the first responders.

Re: 9/11
I was at work and my wife called me and told me about it (it's also her birthday). She didn't have many details at the time so I assumed it was likely a Cessna or something because we didn't have access to a TV. Eventually an IT guy fixed some rabbit ears to an old TV on a cart and we all crowded into a room and watched.
9/11
I could swear we have a thread on this.
I was in my dorm room, it was my freshman yr. My suitemate came in and said we were under attack. I turned on the TV just as my phone rang and it was my dad asking if I had heard the news. We talked on the phone as the 2nd plane hit on live TV. I remember it for the same reasons as most but also because it was one of the few times I’ve ever heard my dad drop the F-bomb. He goes, “wow. Who ever did this is fucked.”
Like all of you, I was glued to the TV. I watched the towers fall and the hysteria all that day. The next day, me and a group of guy from my hall went to the Army and USMC recruiting stations to enlist.
To your 2nd Question- I think the 1st Responders get honored enough. I’m not sure about the level of care, but knowing our insurance industry, I’m positive they all got fucked.
As an aside- what are the rates of lung cancer in NYC following 9/11

Another Year, and not forgetting.
In a meeting, and a late arrival mentioned a plane hitting the World Trade Center. We were schedule to have GHW Bush speak to our company. Had everything lined up to have Bush sign a couple baseballs. That of course was cancelled.

Re: 9/11
I was sitting in a conference room starting HAZOP training when a guy who was coming in late came in just after 9AM and said a plane had hit the WTC. We took a quick break and I went to my office to check CNN and I'm pretty sure I called my parents at some point in time. I went out with a guy to get an antenna so that we could pick up the TV signal and watch in another conference room (they had a radio broadcasting over the speaker system in the plant up to that point). Saw the Towers fall and then I think everyone was allowed to go home by noon. Watched the rest of the day in my apartment. My wife was an elementary school teacher and they didn't dismiss school early so she didn't get home until regular time. Still went to work the next day (I think everyone but pro athletes did) and it was eerie with no planes in the sky for the next couple of days (I think they grounded everything for 2 or 3 days and we lived in an area with a lot of plane traffic in the air).
As for the second question, I think first responders get plenty of praise and recognition. Heck, I think 9/11 is the event that actually put the phrase "first responders" in everyone's lexicon as it was such a significant part of the WTC part of 9/11. Certainly was a feature point in plenty of the movies made about it. I think we have started to minimize the remembrance of the folks lost throughout the day on 9/11, but that's also a bit natural as the event itself gets further away in time. I'm not sure about health care for folks impacted, especially long term, but if it's like any other health care I'm sure it could be improved.

Might be faster for me to go find that thread and repost. Nutshell, I was stuck on the Washington Mall literally halfway between the Monument and Capitol when the final plane went down. Took me 15 minutes to get there from my office and took me something like 5 hours to get home from that spot. Radio reports that the State Dept building had been hit, Capitol had been hit, etc... was rather disturbing since I was sitting in the middle of it.Ibanez wrote:I could swear we have a thread on this.

I remember during my TAPS briefing asking if I was supposed to resign my commission and when.
This became a hot topic on Sept 11, 2001! Many calls were made among my friends from the same Marine OCS company who honorable discharged after our first commitment. We thought there was a reasonable chance of recall, but luckily that didn’t occur before Feb 2002.
Whew.

Re: 9/11
I was driving to work in Boise Idaho listening to the Bob & Tom show...... I actually thought it was a gag bit on their show for about 10 mins.
When I realized it was real I turned around bought 30 cases of water and 2k rounds of ammo and went home. I didn't go to work that week just made sure I was in the best defensive posture if anything else happened.
I think people get honored enough but as a country the majority have forgot and still want to let out country be invaded by people that want to actively crush our culture.
Those people need to be dealt with harshly

I was on a water quality sampling run with a State crew. I first heard about the incident as we were going through the Ostrica lock to go from the Mississippi River into Quarantine Bay and the marshes. As we went through the lock some guys working it told us that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center buildings. After we got back to the launch after the run we found out another plane did it.AZGrizFan wrote:Where were you? .
One of the two State guys was a Vietnam Vet. He kept saying that the jet fuel would burn really hot and it'd melt the building infrastructure. We were on the radio with their supervisor and the supervisor described the collapses while were were driving.
