I'm just glad a good old Yankee is the NASCAR champ.

I know fans are VERY passionate about their drivers and heritage and all that stuff, but after Gordon retired I only started rooting for Joey because of the ridiculous amount of times I'd hear people hating him because he was a rich boy from the North lol.
Truex is also a rich boy from the north. In fact, his dad's company (Sea Watch Int'l) is based in my hometown. I should probably like him, but no.

Harvick and Busch are from California and Nevada respectively (not SEC Southerners either) and neither come from the lower middle-class.

As far as why I pull for Logano, it's all because of my youngest son. For whatever reason, after watching some NASCAR at Dover and on TV, he decided that Joey was his guy. That was about five years ago. I was a Jr fan at the time.

We let my son join the Joey Logano Fan Club and were able to attend a charity event at New Hampshire with Joey, Joey's fiancee Brittany, and Joey's mom. They were really nice people, surprisingly so. My son and I assembled several bicycles with Brittany (had no idea who she was while we were doing it, until toward the end) and got to shoot the shit with Joey for a good long while. He signed my son's Shell #22 themed Pinewood Derby car. Everyone left happy. Been a big fan ever since.

Oh I know, which is why NASCAR fans (or what's left) can be ridiculous. Even a non-nonsensical reason like "smiles too much" makes them hate certain racers. But overall, it's all stupid fun.

Glad your boys had a good experience; he seems like an overall good dude.

Also where's BDK? Did he die or something?

Something I have been thinking about. Since everyone is saying NASCAR is dying, we need something to bring the fans back. How about NASCAR having a couple races each year where other than the standard safety and car shape rules, there should be no rules on drivetrain and cosmetics. Motor/rear wing/brakes/openings for air/ride heigh/ etc are whatever the teams decide to do. I think those races would be sell outs with a huge TV audience.

I was barely watching nascar for the last few years as it was. The only reason I did was because of Gordon. I don't watch that series at all anymore.

Got my tickets for Richmond. My girlfriend - who knows nothing about motor sports - got as giddy as I've ever seen her when I asked if she wanted to go. That took me by complete surprise.

I'm surprised you like NASCAR, with the patent unfairness of it all. At the Cup level, I'm surprised you don't advocate for:
-a 70% tax on winnings and sponsorship money of the big money teams to be redistributed to the small money teams in the interest of fairness.
-restarts always have the small money teams start in front of the big money teams because the small money teams are financially and competitively disadvantaged..
Affirmative action for the playoffs:
- a certain number of slots must be reserved for small money teams.
-a couple of playoff slots to be reserved minority drivers (currently 4), whether or not they would have gotten in on their own merit, because the playoffs are too white.

..But you have to go home now. We have to have peace…

2019 rules package announced last Oct. NASCAR in 2017 went towards less downforce. Now going the total opposite of that.

"...We think that’ll put it more in the drivers’ hands, especially as we go to some of the intermediate tracks, and are excited to see how that plays out,” Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Development Officer said....."

Give me a friggin break. You want to put more in the drivers hands. Just get rid of the entire spoiler..NASCAR, grasping at straws.

At least something positive announced on Monday:

"NASCAR will now disqualify race winners that fail post-race inspection

....In the new system, the first- and second-place finishers and at least one randomly selected car will undergo a post-race inspection at the track. The targeted time frame is anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours, and once the inspection is complete a winner will be announced.

If one of those cars does fail inspection, the driver and team will receive last-place points while the rest of the finishing order would move up.

The disqualified team or teams would also be stripped of playoff points, stage points and automatic postseason berths and playoff advancement that would have come with the win."

Notable driver changes.
-Martin Truex, Jr. going from the #78 Furniture Row Racing, which shut down its team, to the #19 Joe Gibbs Racing.
-Daniel Suarez going from the #19 JGR to the #41 Stewart-Haas Racing.
-Kurt Busch going from the #41 SHR to the #1 Chip Ganassi Racing.
-Jamie McMurray, going from the #1 CGR to the Fox Sports booth.
-Ryan Newman going from the #31 Richard Childress Racing to the #6 Roush Fenway Racing.
#31 RCR car will change to the #8, and be driven by rookie Daniel Hemric. Trevor Bayne, who drove the #6 majority of last season, doesn't have a ride, and Matt Kenseth, who came out of retirement to drive the #6 for part of the season, is back in retirement.

NASCAR went communist decades ago, mostly for safety, but also for competition reasons. Off the top of my head:

1. Chase format
2. Stage racing
3. Restrictor plates
4. Pit road speed limit
5. Reduced number of crew allowed over the wall to five
6. Penalty not for actually losing a tire, but just not having full control of it for a split second during pit stop
7. Institution of the lucky dog
8. Institution of the wave around for all lappers in front of leader with one to go before green
9. Elimination of the lappers restarting on the inside line
10. F1 style qualifying
11. Banned bump drafting
12. Crash clock
13. Reducing number of races a higher-series driver can run in a lower series
14. Eliminating points competition for higher series drivers in a lower series
15. Limiting the Cup series to 36 charters and 40 starting slots
16. Green/white/checker finishes
17. Overtime line
18. Car of Tomorrow (and the general move away from stock cars in general)
19. Banning of tobacco sponsorship
20. Banning of engine or transmission changes in-race. (Junior Johnson was the master of this; 20 minutes tops to swap out a blown engine; sometimes he'd almost have it done before they restarted)

Another new thing for this season is Ford changing from the Fusion to the Mustang body style.
http://www.championshipsubdivision.com/ ... 0#p1199075

2017 when Toyota went to the new Camry in they struggled the 1st half of the season, then took off then 2nd half.
Last year Chevy replaced the SS with the Camaro ZL1 body style, they struggled, esp the 1st 2/3 of the season. Only won 1 of the 1st 21 races- Austin Dillon's Daytona 500 win. Chase Elliott did win 3 of the last 15. Cup wins last year:
Ford 19
Toyota 13
Chevy: 4

What might help Ford is that with the major change in aero rules going from low to high downforce, all 3 manufacturers will be in the same boat- last year's notes and data are pretty much thrown out and everyone is basically starting from scratch. Wouldn't surprise me to see Ford be similar to Toyota in 2017- struggle a little the 1st half or so of the season, then take off. I'll predict that Ford wins less than 19 races, and Chevy at least doubles their win total from last year, but will be 3rd again.

HMS dominates qualifying at Daytona. The entire team fills the top four spots in round one and final qualifying. Byron and Bowman will fill the front row of the 500.

JFC, no justice in the Clash. Jimmie Johnson wrecks most of the field, rain starts immediately after, and they call the race and declare him the winner.

After watching the qualifying races it obvious NASCAR is all about the numbers.

500 miles.

200 laps.

40 cars.

1 single line of traffic.

Coma inducing.

Gotta find something else to do on Sundays!
