Another sign that the Republicans had better figure out how to get out of this:

https://poll.qu.edu/national/release-de ... aseID=2592
American voters support 63 - 30 percent a Democratic proposal to reopen parts of the government that do not involve border security while negotiating funding for the Wall, according to a Quinnipiac University National Poll released today. Every party, gender, education, age and racial group supports this idea except Republicans, who are opposed 52 - 39 percent.
Some more tidbits:
American voters are negative in every question about the wall, saying:
 59 – 40 percent that it is not a good use of taxpayer dollars;
 55 – 43 percent that the wall would not make the U.S. safer;
 59 – 40 percent that the wall is not necessary to protect the border;
 52 percent say the wall is against American values as 41 percent say the wall is consistent
with American values.
It looks to me like, if anything, things are getting worse for the "Build the Wall" side.

You can see the problem again: The population overall is on the Democrats' side by a sizable margin. But the nut job Trump zombies are not so Republican politicians have to worry about that. They need to figure out a way to do what the actual US population wants while saving face enough to keep the Trump zombies from being TOO angry at them.

Please keep your political rants out of this. This is a matter of survival. I'm down to two cans of Hormel chili w/ beans a day now. Pretty soon it'll just be one. I stopped feeding my cat. I let her out to forage for mice and birds. In the snow.

Here's a good line from the Quinnipiac release; referring to Trump's Oval Office address followed by the robotic Democrat response:
American voters believed Pelosi/Schumer more than Trump 46 – 36 percent, including
48 – 33 percent among independent voters.
How bad do you have to be for Pelosi and Shcumer to have BEATEN you with THAT presentation?

It's time for the Republicans to find a graceful way to surrender. And, really, the Democrats need to help them out some for the good of the country. They need to be cognizant of the pickle the Republicans are in with the Trump zombies and do what they can to help them find a face-saving way out of the box they are in.

Here's a short one for you from that Quinnipiac poll released today:

28. Do you support or oppose building a wall along the border with Mexico?

All Voters

Support 43%
Oppose 55%

Independents

Support 39%
Oppose 59%

Yes, I read that. They are out of touch with reality.

And Trump is all alone in that big, empty White House. Today he says he hasn't left it for months. Except for that trip 2 days ago or that trip last week to Texas(?).

24 days ago may as well be 24 years ago to Trump. He's flip-flopped multiple times since then. Even refused to sign a Republican-approved bill to fund the government. That's about the only defense I can give McConnell for doing nothing since then. No negotiation, no leadership, and back home to Kentucky while 850,000 families go without pay. He's sick of Trump's bullshit too.

Oh you know it's affecting more than 850,000 as well; it's gotta be at least a million if not more.

I've got two private contractors in my personal circle that were forced to burn up their vaca time and have been on unpaid leave since.

Yes, I'm only counting the civilians plus Coast Guard. It probably expands by at least a factor of three when you count contractors, suppliers, and vendors that cater to the people not being paid. I may drive over to DC one day this week just to see what my food truck vendors are up to, or if they're even still showing up. On a typical day at L'Enfant, there are 20-30 trucks lined up on Maryland Ave. :ohno:

I watched a little bit of Cuomo a few minutes ago and there was a statement in that banner thing at the bottom that said someone close to Trump said Trump won't budge because he thinks he's winning the public relations battle. It makes me wonder how much of what Trump says is lying and how much of it is just being totally out of touch with reality. I mean, I'm confident he does lie a lot. But does he really think he's winning the public relations battle right now?

Next time the Democrats respond to this they need to pick someone who is good on television. That needs to be the criterion. Hold auditions if they want. But they just need to come off very relaxed and say something like, "Look, right now the President is using extortion. It's like if terrorists take a hostage. You can't give into it because it just encourages more hostage taking if you do. It's not a lot of money in the grand scheme of the federal budget. But if it works for him this time this guy is going to do this ALL the time and we'll have this problem over and over again. We have no choice but to draw the line right up front."

Something like that. But they need to pick a good person who's got good television presentation skills to deliver the message.

I'm sure you've read the after-actions on the Challenger explosion at NASA? That whole disaster was a result of groupthink and reinforcing one's collective bullshit.

Trump is being fed a lot of bad info from a very small inner circle of nutjobs.

I tried but they want me to pay $1 to read it. Usually I can read the Washington Post without paying if I have the ad blocker off. Not this time for some reason.

Note this content near the end of the article:
Union officials representing Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement employees last week spoke in support of the shutdown at an impromptu White House briefing,
I know the Border Patrol union endorsed Trump and the current President is a big supporter. But I also know that under previous leadership the border Patrol Union said the wall would be wasting taxpayer money.

I would love to see a confidential poll of rank and file Border Patrol Union members where they are asked if they'd rather keep working while missing paychecks for some indefinite period or keep the government funded while negotiations proceed. I'm sure a lot of them will be absolutely thrilled if things go as it looks like they will and they miss a second paycheck so that they've gone without pay for a month and have a bunch of bills due.

What good, honestly, would it have done for McConnell to stay in DC when 30 donks went to Puerto Rico?
