Yeah, there's NO connection between economic desperation and crime.

There is no connection only excuses justifying bad behavior

That's why Alphie should love it. He loves Trump, a man who speaks in hyperbole 96.93% of the time.

Whatever we decide, just make sure the oligarchs remain charge and US companies can continue extracting wealth from their countries. It’s worked so far.

(But, but Venezuela!)

 Improve their economy so less of them travel here for economic opportunities, en masse. It's an idea.

Or nuke them. I dunno .
I don't necessarily disagree with that idea, but to what extent does their economy need to be improved so that they don't see a large enough difference in economic opportunity? Life is pretty sweet in America, political dramas aside. I would think a large swath of people, given the choice to live in most any Central American country (or Caribbean country) or live in the US, would pick the latter.

I think we need to greatly increase the legal means to get here, both in terms of quantity of people allowed and the simple, easy to know process to go about that, while really getting tough on the illegal ways to get here. I think Trump has only really done the latter (which quickly moved into a cruel exercise), and Congress has done pretty much nothing on either front for decades now.

FTR I'm not saying improved economic conditions down there is a panacea for the problem. Now that people like MS-13 have a foothold here it's going to take some time to get rid of them, even if we incompletely shut and militarized the border tomorrow. A good start would be more resources for law enforcement to deal with them.

Clearly isolationism is the only solution.

Yup, and it's not like we don't have crime and gang problems with US citizens. Improve Mexico or CentAm all you want, it won't be as good as the US, they will still come here and we will still have the same problems with our own people.

All the poor that just live.... Don't make excuses to commit crime. I was being generous with the 50% comment its probably like 80% that dont make excuses for commiting crime

Homicides down 30% in Chicago this year. We can thank all the roving bands of MAGA hat wearers policing the city.

Because closing the border with Mexico means 16% of parts would be unavailable and they'd have to shut down.
Yes but 6.93% of parts are for VWs and Miatas

Trump: OK, Mexico, I’m giving you a one-year warning to control the drugs and the Northern Triangle hordes. Then I’ll REALLY close the border!

The border would not stay closed long, it would hurt us a but, but kill Mexico. Mexico would soon start sending these people back.
