We're 27th!

Post by kalm »

30 years of Reaganomics and establishment thinking from both sides of the aisle.

As I've said many times, human infrastructure is an important investment as well, and one which we've been neglecting.
USA ranked 27th in the world in education and healthcare—down from 6th in 1990
America continues to tread water in healthcare and education while other countries have enacted reforms to great effect.

SCOTTY HENDRICKS
03 October, 2018

The American healthcare and education systems are known to need some work, but a new study suggests we've fallen far in comparison to the rest of the world.
The findings show what progress, if any, 195 countries have made over the last twenty years
The study suggests that economic growth is tied to human capital, which gives a dire view of America's economic prospects.

The concept of human capital has only been around since the '50s but it's become an increasingly popular way of looking at the economic potential of countries. Typically defined as "the attributes of a population that, along with physical capital such as buildings, equipment, and other tangible assets, contribute to economic productivity" it includes things such as education levels, skill sets, and other intangible items that foster economic growth.

While we already know that a countries' average education level is associated with its economic growth, a recent study looking into the growth of human capital around the world over the last 26 years has included healthcare outcomes to the mix. While it was created to help motivate lower and middle income countries to increase their human capital investment, it offers a harsh look at the progress the United States has made over the previous 20; if any.

Pretty weak performance for a nation that was handed the world after 1945.

Please show me the 26 other countries people are flocking to for their medical care and college education.
The problem, or at least part of it, is that much of this money is spent inefficiently. The Nordic countries, which dominate the top spots on the list, have universal healthcare which provides better outcomes at a lower price than the American system does. Because of this system, the cost of drugs and health care administration is lower in Europe than in America.

Pretty weak performance for a nation that single handedly rebuilt the world after 1945.

Dunning Kruger Effect and Confirmation Bias combined

We're No. 1
We've been saying it to each other since 1945 and not so humbly announcing it to the world
So when we hear or see data to the contrary

1) Deny it
2) If it persists - attack the source
3) If the source checks out then point at "The Mexicans" swarming at the gates
4) if we are re-directed back on topic we then demure to "It's not that bad"

 I'll take option 4, but with a caveat that I was never off topic asshat. We're not #1 in tons of categories... who cares? Finland probably has less hate crime. Is that because they have better police, better schooling, or could it be because they are pretty homogeneous? :coffee:

You're not really who I was targeting with that post (*cough .... AZ)
But you make a great point about Finland and a homogeneous population

We have more sub-cultures here in the U.S.
and frankly some of our subcultures are large and defiant

The anti-education anti-socialization movements from our black population
we have a growing anti-science anti-education movement from our fundamentalists

It's difficult to get everybody on the same page
in a nation as large and culturally diverse and free as the U.S.

I think's a great topic and it's not just from the homogeneous standpoint. Russell Brand on Rogan last week questioned the whole concept of federalism given the fact humans are not meant to exist in tribes of 300 million.

No. I'm not even sure you were on AGS when that happened with OSBF.

Point was folks love to bring up 6.93 all the time and it's not because they are sore about. It's actually the opposite. They think it's funny. Like you slobbering over a US bank overhaul using Iceland as your basis.

I guess what I'm saying is that Iceland banks were close to your 6.93 moment. :kisswink:

Teachers I know, think there is too much emphasis on teaching kids to take test, instead of teaching kids how to learn the subject.

Some of these could be inflated by government caused "suicides". Hell, half the rate in the US can be traced to the Clintons.
