Eflin with the Phils first 9-inning complete game since 2016.
Harper batting .138 over the last nine games.
Phils still in first by a game and a half.

What about Phil Jackson? He's been through some times, is he still fighting for relevancy?

Re: 2019 Fightin' Phils Back to Relevancy Thread
I looked back at some baseball stats — no sport has better stats — and this is one metric to see how much the game has changed. Since 2000, exactly one pitcher — the immortal James Shields of Tampa Bay— has completed more than 9 games in a season. Even “workhorse” Roy Halladay never had more than 9. Last year, in both leagues, the complete games leaders had...wait for it ...2 (two) apiece.93henfan wrote:Eflin with the Phils first 9-inning complete game since 2016.
I miss the good old days of four-man rotations, when pitchers like Warren Spahn and Robin Roberts would get about 40 starts a year and complete half of them. No pitcher since knuckleballer Charlie Hough in ‘87 has reached 40 starts in a year. In ‘72-‘73, knuckleballer Wilbur Wood started 97 games in consecutive years.

I saved about $60 on tickets and should save another $30 or so on food.
Winning.

Just make sure they cook those hot dogs - near the later parts of the game the supply can't keep up with the demand and you get dogs that don't ever make it to the hot dog warmer. After enough beers it shouldn't matter though.93henfan wrote:Man, you see right through me to the cheapskate within.GannonFan wrote:

Truth be told, it's a school night and my sons ARE going to school tomorrow. If the game isn't compelling, we probably won't stay past the stretch. Well, that was brutally bad. Shitty fielding, shitty hitting, and a little of both by the $330M dollar man.
My sons are excited that we made it in the TV frame for the Goodrum HR. That was the only highlight.

I didn't hear boos, only grumbling in my section. People all just spent $120 on his jersey. They're not prepared to boo just yet. And yes, there are always the same couple of drunks either booing or yelling "everybody hits - woo hoo". Those guys won't be stoppedIvytalk wrote:Have we started booing Harper yet?93henfan wrote:Well, that was brutally bad. Shitty fielding, shitty hitting, and a little of both by the $330M dollar man.

That will live on forever. I don't remember hearing it before that '93 season, but it's never stopped since.93henfan wrote:yelling "everybody hits - woo hoo".

You did get to see Velasquez throw almost 100 pitches in less than 4 innings. Can we make the guy the closer yet?

Re: 2019 Fightin' Phils Back to Relevancy Thread
No joke. I remember looking up at the pitch count In the third and it was in the 70s. This was after I had remarked to a guy sitting behind me before the first pitch that Velasquez was their best pitcher so far and I probably just jinxed him.bluehenbillk wrote:You did get to see Velasquez throw almost 100 pitches in less than 4 innings. But honestly, other than a horrible playoff choke, that was as unfulfilling as a game gets last night. At least we were the first row UNDER the scoreboard in right when it started raining. Never had to seek shelter.

Phils open Nats series with a 4-2 victory. Rhys with a big 3-run homer.
Home plate ump Bill Miller was erratic all night, particularly vulnerable to calling strikes on inside pitches to righties. At least he was consistent against both teams. He also got both Davey and Gabe in heated conversations, the former for a phantom mound visit when the Nats pitcher was simply asking the catcher if he was OK after he was hit my a ricochet, and the second after some unidentified hullabaloo after Neris' first pitch in the ninth.
It was exhibit A of an umpire trying to be an attention whore all night.
The game ended on a ball a foot inside being called a strike and Michael Taylor was LIVID. Rightfully so. He was the tying run.

Phils take the rubber match over the Nats and drop them 5 games back.
Efflin with seven strong innings and an RBI.

Typical Velazquez start. 98 pitches in 4+ innings, plus a couple of bombs. Phils offense laid an egg again. $330 Million Man down to .226.

Re: 2019 Fightin' Phils Back to Relevancy Thread
The Phils are clearly not a championship caliber team yet. Need an ace (Nola isn't one), a couple of studs after him, a complete bullpen overhaul, and somehow get the hitters to be a little less streaky.
They may still even get to 90 wins in this bad division, but no chance at winning the LCS unless five or six of the streakers all decide to hit at the same time and they score 7+ runs every game.

Phils bounce back nicely in 11-1 win over Cards tonight. Good pitching by Nola, a GS for Harper, and four hits (including a dinger) for Rhys.
