Rookie minicamp invites don’t mean much. Most of those don’t even get UDFA contracts to get into camp. As I understand it:
-256ish drafted (7 rounds x 32 per round + around 32 supplemental)..
-500ish? UDFA (it seems to be around 15 a team give or take right after the draft..
-1,000ish? rookie minicamp invites. Its definitely way more than get a UDFA right after the draft, and only a fraction of those with rookie minicamp invites will get a UDFA to get into camp, and then only a fraction of them will make a roster..

Louisiana Monroe had the only one. That is one School that had more talent as a I-AA than it's had as a I-A/FBS. During the drafts following the 12 years during which the school, then Northeast Louisiana, had I-AA teams it had 15 players drafted. One has to adjust because some where in the 8th round. But they had 10 drafted in the first 7 rounds. The last two I-AA years were 1992 and 1993. They had 2 players drafted from the 1992 team and 3 players drafted from the 1993 team in the first 7 rounds. The two running backs they had in 1992 both started in the NFL as rookies in 1993. One was drafted in the 8th round so he'd be a free agent today.

Nobody in the Sun Belt now has that kind of talent relative to the rest of college football. And since Northeast Louisiana/Louisiana Monroe went I-A/FBS it's had 10 players drafted from 25 years worth of teams. Another indicator it that as a I-AA Northeast Louisiana had three teams with multiple players drafted from them during 7 rounds. They were 1987 (2), 1992 (2), and 1993 (3). Since they've gone I-A/FBS it's only happened once. That was the 1998 team (2).

Delaware laid a whooping on them back in '92 down there when they had Roosevelt Potts and another good RB. They had never seen the Wing-T and it killed them. Those NE La teams always had holes that got exposed in the playoffs. But that was a tough era for the Southland (and the Yankee too so not just picking on the Southland)- the Southern was in their heyday, Montana was just coming on the scene with Dickenson, and you still had some good indies out there like YSU.

Marshall‘s heyday wasn‘t 1982-1993 though. It was 1991-1996. That‘s when they made the NC game 5 x in 6 seasons, winning 2. The only season of those 6 they didn’t make it, 1994, they made the semis. 6 straight seasons of making at least the semis was the record until NDSU broke it. BTW Marshall’s DC back then (1990-1995) was former JMU HC Mickey Matthews.

Only 4 Marshall players were drafted who played at Marshall during that 1991-1996 heyday, but 3 were 1st rounders, and all 4, + 2 UDFA, had big time NFL careers.
-Troy Vincent: WR, 1993 8th Rd, 15 seasons NFL, 2001 Pro Bowl, 2001 All Pro, played 3 Super Bowls.
-Mike Bartrum, Long Snapper/TE, 1993 UDFA, 13 seasons NFL, made 1 Pro Bowl
-John Wade: Center, 1998 5th Rd, 12 seasons NFL.
-Randy Moss: 1998 1st Rd, 15 seasons. FL, 6x Pro Bowl, 4x 1st team All Pro, NFL Offensive Rookie of Yr, Most Receiving TDs by Rookie, Most Receiving TDs in a season, 5 seasons led NFL in receiving TDs, NFL All Decade Team, etc, etc.
-Chris Hanson, Punter, 1999 UDFA, 11 seasons NFL, 2002 Pro Bowl & All Pro.
-Chad Pennington, 2000 1st Rd (started 1995 NC season, redshirted 1996), 11 seasons NFL.
They had a couple others from 1991-1996 who made teams as UDFA, and had brief stints in the NFL.

I think that 1996 Marshall team, their last in I-AA, was the best ever at the I-AA level. LOADED. Not only did they go 15-0, but they DESTROYED almost every team they played, and Moss was a MAN AMONG BOYS out there. Was almost comical. And in 1997, their 1st year in I-A, with those same I-AA players, went 10-3.

That was actually a relatively good era for the Southland. Northeast Louisiana was the only one that won a national title but during 1984 through 1989 the Southland had four different programs make the championship game.
