Private payrolls surge by 275,000 in April, blowing past estimates in biggest gain since July

The U.S. economy added far more jobs than expected in April as payrolls in the services sector grew by the most in more than two years, according to data released Wednesday by ADP and Moody’s Analytics.

Private payrolls grew by 275,000 last month, the biggest increase since July, when they expanded by 284,000. Economists polled by Dow Jones expected private payrolls growth of 177,000...

....Wednesday’s report came after the Commerce Department said last week the economy grew by 3.2% in the first quarter on an annualized basis. That was the best start to a year since 2015. The official jobs report for April from the government will be released Friday.”

Same old same old. This is not an unusual job number relative to the numbers in the current expansion that began about 10 years ago now. Like the fact that it was a higher number than any since 9 months ago is supposed to suggest that we have a MUCH better economy under Trump.

This was private jobs. We'll see what the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports for all jobs during April. But so far during the Trump Administration the highest job number for any month reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics is 330,000. That was February, 2018. Do you know what the highest number reported during the Obama Administration was? 534,000. There was also a 339,000 and a 336,000.

Just stop. This was not an indication that "things were bad before the Dear Leader took over and now they're SO much better." It's another number associated with an economic recovery that is now about 10 years long.

JSO is right. This economic expansion started under Obama and has continued under Trump. Thankfully Trump told the Fed to stop raising interest rates as that could have stalled everything. I give both men credit where credit is due.

Yep.

“WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. employers added a robust 263,000 jobs in April, suggesting that businesses have shrugged off earlier concerns that the economy might slow this year and now anticipate strong customer demand.

The unemployment rate fell to a five-decade low of 3.6% from 3.8%, though that drop reflected a rise in the number of people who stopped looking for work. Average hourly pay rose 3.2% from 12 months earlier, a healthy increase that matched the increase in March....”

Those are good numbers.

I wonder what your reaction was when unemployment began dropping under Obama. It went from 9.9% to 4.9% under Obama. I'm sure you hailed Obama as you do Trump. :coffee:

And so we have the continuation of the trend indicated in this graph at the Bureau of Labor Statistics web site:

Image

If you go to the page where the image is, at https://data.bls.gov/timeseries/lns14000000, you can see in the table under the graph that the rate peaked in October, 2009, and has been in a generally declining trend since. It had declined from the 10% peak in October, 2009 by 5.3 percentage points to 4.7% in January, 2017, when Trump took office. Since then it has declined by another 1.1 percentage points to where it is now.

Same old same old. Nobody who is just looking at data without knowledge of who was President when would say it indicates something changed around the end of 2016 or the beginning of 2017 to change things. The only change in "direction" indicated by that graph happened back in 2009.

That's just the objective truth. I don't see how people can argue with the observation.

Below is a good graph on job creation. You can generate it by going to https://tradingeconomics.com/united-sta ... m-payrolls, clicking on the "10Y" button under the graph, then using the drop down menu just to the left of the "Compare" button to select "Candlestick." It shows the monthly job increase/decrease numbers as points. And you can see that, again, the only change in direction any objective person would see just looking at the data occurred back around late 2009 or early 2010. That's when things "leveled off" after rising from the depths of the great recession. Again: No objective person just looking at those data would say that something happened around the end of 2016 or the beginning of 2017 to change things. No objective person would say those data suggest that the initial estimate of 263,000 reported for April, 2019, (which is included as the last point to the right on the graph) is particularly remarkable. It's consistent with the range of variation expressed since things leveled off back around the end of 2009 and the beginning of 2010. Honestly I don't see how anybody can seriously argue with what I'm telling you guys. It's another area where it is fair to say that Trump hasn't screwed things up. But it is NOT accurate to say there has been an improvement associated with his tenure.

Yes. A continuation into an area NEVER BEFORE SEEN IN OUR LIFETIMES. You don’t find that the least bit impressive? If it was so fucking easy, how come NO president in the last 49 years (including Obama) had been able to do it prior to Trump? Lowest African American unemployment ever. Lowest Hispanic unemployment ever. Lowest female unemployment ever.

You can huff and puff all you want. There is no way just looking at the data would lead one to think something changed in the trend around the end of 2016 and the beginning of 2017. Again: Anybody just looking at the data would say there was a change around the end of 2009 and the beginning of 2010. That's when the trend changed from an increasing unemployment rate to a decreasing rate. Then a downward trend started that has continued through this point. There is not the SLIGHTEST indication that the trend changed around the time Trump took office.

Yes. A continuation into an area NEVER BEFORE SEEN IN OUR LIFETIMES. You don’t find that the least bit impressive? If it was so **** easy, how come NO president in the last 49 years (including Obama) had been able to do it prior to Trump?
How are the deficits looking under Trump?
