The Iran War

Post by 93henfan »

One of the tankers, the Front Altair, carrying a cargo of petrochemical feedstock, was ablaze in waters between Gulf Arab states and Iran.

Iran's state news agency said it had sunk, although the Norwegian owner had said it was afloat and its crew were safe.

The other tanker was adrift without any crew.

I had to look that up.
Chemical feedstocks derived from petroleum principally for the manufacture of chemicals, synthetic rubber, and a variety of plastics.

You know this isn't getting much play because Trump's nature as a complete atrocity dominates the news but this is serious.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth

But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

The author has plenty of income and so will his great, great, great...grandchildren...if he chooses not to give it away. He and I just prefer fair competition and upward mobility. Why do you hate these things?

Nice butthurt argument though....

Seriously, what the heck are you talking about? Go to Drudge, CNN, MSNBC, etc.... this was front page. I bet it's front page, above the fold of the NYT and WaPo.

Btw, I was joking a bit with the title of the thread. I sat in on the Op Plan rehearsals on NorKo and Iran every year when I wore a uniform. We don't win a war with Iran. Sure, we win kill count and BDA by a mile, but this country doesn't have the will to beat a mountainous country the size of Iran. Iran is easily twice as difficult to hold as Afghanistan, which we only tenuously held for a few years before we decided to peace out except for a few outposts, a green zone in the capital, and a couple of big air bases.

Expect a few Tomahawks or a sunken patrol boat and not much else. Let Israel fuck with them. That would be more fun to watch anyway.

Not really. We're the largest oil producer in the world and an exporter of some distillates. We needed oil 15 years ago when we weren't able to suck Texas and ND shale through a straw.

Yes, I'm well aware. But we need THEIR oil first. That way, when they run out the entire region will become irrelevant and we can extricate and let them do whatever the fuck they want to each other. :coffee: :coffee:

This morning, C-SPAN was asking callers what they thought about a potential conflict with Iran.

It's amazing how many are so willing to go to war, and how quick they forget about the current "War on Terror." One woman called and said she'd be proud if her son went to liberate oppressed people (as if that's the reason we'd fight Iran).

Most people don't comprehend the size of Iran, or the fact that it is mountainous.

The open Iraqi desert was a showroom for the M1 tank and US air superiority. All that is handcuffed badly once you add terrain and cover.

And because mufuggers are lazy, I'll take the liberty of cutting and pasting Google Maps below, to show the size comparisons of Afghanistan and Iraq to Iran:

I don't think they want liberation. :coffee:

They want to meet Allah. I suggest we help them.

But Iran was at war with Iraq for many years and it ended in a draw. We took Iraq in a matter of days. Sure, size matters (she said), but are they able to put up a sizable fight? Does the current regime really have the support of it's people?

Meh... CID can probably lay this out more accurately
But Iran is an Islamic Republic that rules over a shitload of Persians
and Persians are notoriously indifferent towards hardcore Islam

Although Iran is reported to be 99% Islamic
many of it's peoples - particularly it's Persian peoples - are Islamic in name only

So...
in short: The Islamic Republic in charge is not beloved by all

Saddam was not beloved by all or even most Iraqis, but that doesn't mean they welcomed a foreign army on their soil. I suspect Iran would be much the same.

You do realize that Iraq was given billions in cash from Saudi Arabia, the US, and Europe?

And the US provided military equipment, advising, and intelligence?

And Iraq was right next door, not having to mobilize an Army, Navy, and Air Force halfway around the globe.

And it was a popular war.

And they still couldn't beat Iran.

Also, we took Iraq in a matter of days (after months of build-up and weeks of aerial bombardment with air superiority) for the reasons I previously mentioned. It's a wide-open sandbox. A dream for military planners. You can see EVERYTHING on the battlefield, and they have nowhere to hide.
