Connecticut moving to Big East for all sports except football
So it looks like for Connecticut the possibilities are:
1. Remain in the AAC for football: Unlikely AAC will allow this.
2. Join another conference for football only: Unlikely another conference will allow this.
3. Become the 7th I-A football independent, joining Notre Dame, Army, Massachusetts, Liberty, BYU, New Mexico.

4. Drop to I-AA, taking the Idaho route. I imagine this is unlikely.
5. Drop football. Most likely in the long run?

From late Jan, but even more applicable now. Makes a compelling argument Connecticut pulling an Idaho and dropping down, even though I’m sure its highly unlikely Connecticut would do this.

If Connecticut did do this, the pressure would quickly mount from certain factions in Massachusetts for the Minutemen to follow suit...

I would look for them to go Indy for awhile to see how it goes, then eventually go FCS along with UMASS.

I suppose that if they DO decide to drop down, they'd go back to the CAA? Would the CAA take them football-only?

UMass is a CAA member for certain sports right now...would the CAA accept them in football is a question that no one knows the answer...SuperHornet wrote:I suppose that if they DO decide to drop down, they'd go back to the CAA? Would the CAA take them football-only?
I doubt it because the preponderance of the major sports belong to the A-10, which doesn’t have football any longer...and UMass will not pull those teams out of the A-10...

I predict they’ll drop FB within 5 years.

I agree. I think they drop it altogether. At least UMass has a history and a band. UConn was always a middling program that was pulled along by the money and prestige that the two basketball programs brought. They could drop football and nobody would notice. They could drop to FCS and still nobody would notice and they would lose money each year. I think they take the option of not losing money. They've been waiting and hoping for an ACC invite that just was never going to happen. Sounds like they gave up waiting.Ivytalk wrote:I predict they’ll drop FB within 5 years.

Building a stadium 22 miles/half hr off campus was incredibly DUMB. Nice G5 stadium, but a giant albatross. Far off campus stadiums (anything more than a few miles/in a different town/city) just don’t work outside of maybe being some legacy P5 powerhouse. And Connecticut’s stadium is 2nd in distance from campus to only UCLA & the iconic Rose Bowl.

Isn't the CAA a football only conference - just like the MVFC?Col Hogan wrote:UMass is a CAA member for certain sports right now...would the CAA accept them in football is a question that no one knows the answer...SuperHornet wrote:I suppose that if they DO decide to drop down, they'd go back to the CAA? A-10 also has a full slate, except football...A few UMass sports are in the CAA...most are in the A-10...Hockey is in Hockey East...and football is currently an independent...

Who would miss it? They could certainly go the way of Vermont. Not like Vermont is really itching it get it back. I went to games in Storrs back when they were I-AA - not a hard stretch to think they could drop it given what little support that version of football had not too long ago.BDKJMU wrote:Ok, so 1974..Ivytalk wrote: University of Vermont? Re: Connecticut moving to Big East for all sports except football
Hate wiki all you want...but from the CAA Wiki
The CAA Football Conference was formed in 2005, although it did not begin play until 2007, as a separate conference independent of the CAA, but administered by the CAA front office. For this reason, there are no true "football associate members" as every member of CAA Football is a full-member of the football-only conference.
It's literally called the CAA Football Conference - just like Missouri Valley Football Conference. Owned/operated by the MVC but not part of the MVC.
It's even got it's own official logo - separate from the CAA - just like the MVFC
I might be a flyover state rube - but that means I have nothing but time to sit inside and read meaningless shit.

Acceptance is important.
I refer to all CAA Football teams not in the regular normal CAA as cowards. Because basketball is so wicked good with out ODU, VCU and Mason these days.
