Maybe ECB farming is different but there are very few small farms left in the midwest, land values have reached a pretty steady level and short of corn going to $7/bushel land prices won't change much, and all farms are already factory farms.

I'd be more concerned about how many people are going to starve in China because they refuse to buy our products. China has a serious problem with a diseases infecting hogs right now. There are reports that over 50% of their pork production is going to have to be eliminated. That will be huge if true.

What do you consider a small farm? My wife and I grew up in Montana and most everybody still has their farms, but a good portion lease the land to their neighbors. Those that do the farming usually have around 3,000 acres to work with.

How productive is the land? Where I am it takes a couple of acres tops to raise a cow/calf unit while down in Texas it takes about 150 acres - 15,000 acres is a lot of land needed to raise 100 cows on.

Anything around here under 1000 acres is small. And as houndy noted the land is a lot more productive. 200-300 bushel per acre corn is common. Land around here is anywhere from $8,000 an acre for shitty ground up to $16-20,000 an acre for good ground.

Why do you think he has been visiting the ASEAN nations? So they can replace China. As Cid stated earlier, China is out of the fake dog poop business and is trying to take over larger aspects of manufacturing like airplanes. People don't buy planes.

John are you really that dense? The question isn't whether we're on the losing end, we've been on the losing end for a long, long time. The question is whether it's too late to turn it around.

Yes, we have benefitted as consumers of cheap products. We have not benefited from a manufacturing and innovation perspective. If a Chinese company wants to build a production facility in the US, they just need to follow the same guidelines that an American company would. If an American company wants to build a production facility in China, they need to partner with the Chinese and share their production methods. Soon after they start producing they will start seeing products that are more than just knock-offs of theirs being sold in China and elsewhere. That is not free trade.
