One of the persistent disappointments of media coverage in the Trump era is how the eye-popping daily headlines about the president obscure slower-moving, equally important developments at all levels of government. This term, the Supreme Court is set to consider cases that could have momentous implications for the future of abortion and LGBTQ rights. It will also hear arguments in Espinoza v. Montana Department of Revenue, an important case about state-voucher funding for private religious schools. If the petitioners win, this case could empower activists such as the current secretary of education, Betsy DeVos, who want more government money to flow to private education, and who believe states are in serious need of a course correction on the way they view religious schools. But according to their progressive opponents, Espinoza could blur the separation of Church and state, locking taxpayers into funding religious education even when they don’t want to.

Re: Fund Your own Damn Schools
This is a complicated issue. One one hand, I don't want my tax dollars being used to fund someone's religious or other private education. On the other had, giving kids in underperforming schools the ability to find better alternatives is a good thing.kalm wrote:On the road to theocracy....

To me, a quality education system should be a strategic imperative. It's critical to America truly being the "Land of Opportunity" and to the future success of the country. I don't know what the answer is but I do know that it isn't more federal government involvement in education (No Child Left Behind and Every Student Succeeds pretty well prove that). Let's give responsibilty for education back to the states.

America’s Public Schools Have Become Socialist Indoctrination Factories
"Theocracy" bad...collectivism good. From their earliest days, young students are taught by modern state curriculum standards to be cogs in the societal wheel rather than independent thinkers. The educational focus is often placed on performing well on standardized tests and memorizing facts, not learning how to make difficult moral choices or cogent arguments with classmates. Young children are constantly told “sharing is caring,” and students routinely “earn” participation trophies for merely showing up.
Influential education “experts” like Alfie Kohn denounce the use of rewards in education, even calling them “destructive.” In many schools, students don’t earn letter grades anymore. We wouldn’t want the poor-performers to feel badly!
Most children no longer extensively read the literary classics, which include a wealth of resources, and many high schoolers spend little time enrolled in civics or history courses compared to classes that focus on mathematics, science, or technology. And when they are in history classrooms, they are often bombarded with left-wing historical revisionism that turns American heroes like George Washington into racist moral monsters.

Re: Fund Your own Damn Schools
Well, the whole idea of separation of church and state as we know it today isn't in the Constitution anyway. The Constitution just prohibits the US Congress making a law with respect to the establishment of religion. I am an agnostic. But that doesn't mean I can't see the truth about the Court, in the past, having invented prohibitions that do not actually exist in the Constitution and which were not contemplated by the people who crafted and ratified the First Amendment.
Whether vouchers issued by States to fund children attending private religious schools are a good idea or not is a separate debate. The Constitution itself does not prohibit them. Just flat doesn't.

As the smug prick around here.... I'd like to chime in on the funding of religious based schools
and frankly I'm all for it - what we're doing right now sure ain't working
and teaching somebody a religion isn't forcing them to believe - if anything with intelligent kids it backfires

Consider that children in primary schools in Shanghai and Beijing graduate at age 17 or 18 FULLY prepared to enter colleges and universities in the US. And they excel in those colleges, including some of our most prestigious ones... is STEM fields
Imagine if our own students were graduating from high school fully prepared to go to college in Beijing, completely in Mandarin, studying engineering

The upside for kids is that now there is no need for church on Sunday or the freeloading clergy that comes with it. The downside for the jesus freaks will come when their handouts have to be shared with the schools being developed by adherents of other, similar, superstitions.Chizzang wrote:As the smug prick around here.... I like the idea of church on Sunday becoming irrelevant almost as much as I'm liking law and order conservatives agreeing with the lefties that the FBI needs to go.

I not opposed at all to eliminating that agency. Of course numerous states and districts will be forced to up their game if they don’t want to further behind. I’ve talked to AF personnel who’ve lived in Alabama and the quality of education between there and WA is laughable. And yes much of the issue is cultural and socioeconomic.UNI88 wrote:Just the present DOE? When was the last major DOE initiative that was successful?Chizzang wrote:

But where does the money come from if we’re going to subsidize private schools? Take it from the public schools and make them worse or raise taxes?
