There is not a line thin enough to draw between 3 and 4.

I wouldn't put them in that category. I see them as pass-first QB's with scrambling ability. I would put Mayfield and Mahomes in that category too. Josh Allen is not afraid to run. I don't think he is as skittish as a Tyrod Taylor in the pocket, but he does run a lot. Maybe too much.

Obviously, the line between running QBs and scrambling QBs is very thin. It comes down to whether the runs are designed, at least as an option, or if the QB abandons the pass too early.

So if you had to create categories, a first trial might be:
1. Pocket passers with limited ability to run. Would rather throw it away than take a hit for a 3 yard gain.
2. Passers that are pass-first but have the ability to move in the pocket and create time for play to develop. Will run safely if it is open.
3. QBs that have good running skills and will abandon the pass after quick reads.
4. QBs that run by design.

Examples:
1. Marino, Montana, Rypien, Roethlisberger, Brady, P. Manning, E. Manning, Rivers, Kelly, Warner, Aikman, Flacco, Goff, Ryan, Stafford, Cousins
2. Theisman, Rodgers, Brees, Farve, Mayfield, Luck, Wilson, Elway, S. Young, Romo, Mahomes
3. Vick, Taylor, Kaepernick, Newton, McNabb, Josh Allen, V. Young, McNair
4. Newton, Tebow, Jackson

Meh, this is off the top of my head as I remember them. Some could arguably be moved up or down a category.
I think Wilson and Rogers utilize designed runs more than you are giving them credit for. Rogers is especially good at masking it but IMO many of his big gains on the ground look like pass plays but he fully intended to run or at least they are similar to RPO's. He's not all that fast and athletic anymore, but still picks up chunks because he's decisive and really good at picking his moments.

God wanted Tebow to be a NFL QB.

That's true. I was trying to distinguish between guys who get designed run plays, or RPOs, and guys who have happy feet and choose to run rather than throw it away.

That may be true. I'm thinking they recognize quickly when teams are in a man defense and the pass patterns are deep and they take off knowing the defense has their backs turned. Not really a designed run, but it presents itself from a read/play-call combo.

She didn't care for the lying part during the whole "did he know his assistant coach was beating the crap out of his wife but kept him employed and protected him because football comes first" fiasco at the end of his Ohio St tenure. She's not a fan of liars. To no surprise, she's not a fan of Trump either. She's consistent. :coffee:

So she hated Paterno too then I take it. Because his looking the other way was 1000 times worse than Meyers'.

Yup, she's not good with people protecting pedophiles either. That box is checked.

She's fine with the institution of Penn State, the University, and even the football program. She's not like those Penn St haters that think anyone associated with Penn St is pro-pedophile, just the ones involved in the act or covering it up.

OK, just checking. I'm glad she was at the forefront of the anti-Paterno movement. :coffee:

Or any other large organization that protects pedophiles. :coffee: :coffee:

Don't worry, she still roots for the swimmers and the gymnasts in the US, but she's no fan of the organizations that run those Olympic sports. :thumb:

Holy heck, you throw Warner and McNair on the list but you leave off former NFL MVP Rich Gannon? That's a slight at Delaware out of nowhere!

Good list (other than the Gannon omission) - not only could they move up or down, but QB's over their career would be in a different spot when younger than where they'd be when they're older, with the trend always to run less later in the career than earlier.

Gannon, since no one asked, would've fit in the #2 category. :coffee:

Several QBs crossed my mind but I couldn't remember enough about them to categorize them. Gannon included.
Not sure what to do about Mariota, Prescott, Wentz, Carr, and Watson. Probably all 2s, although the younger Mariota was probably a 3. Wentz, post surgery may be more of a 1 now.
