Rep. Jeff Van Drew, one of two House Democrats who do not support articles of impeachment against President Trump, is likely to switch parties.

“Several high-level sources with ties to Van Drew” said his chief of staff has notified the lawmaker’s campaign and congressional staffs that he’s switching to the GOP, the New Jersey Globe reported Saturday.

A representative for Van Drew has not yet returned a request for comment from the Washington Examiner.

Van Drew was elected in 2018 to fill the seat held for more than two decades by Republican Frank LoBiondo, who retired.

Van Drew was facing a difficult reelection bid. His seat was rated “toss-up” by many election analysts, and in addition, liberal Democrats were threatening to challenge him in a primary due to his opposition to impeachment.

So he’s switching to retain his seat. What a man of principle.

There's a battle brewing in the Democratic Party between the Republocrats and progressives. The establishment is relying on corporate money but the insurgents seem to be organizing. It will be interesting to see what if anything comes of it and whether there are more defections.

Yeah, I don't know what to think about this. A person gets voted in to represent the local views and/or follow the party lines. It seems switching parties is a bit extreme. Going independent seems to be a more practical approach so that you can truly sort through the legislative decisions that best suit the people that put you there. As an incumbent, you can let your voting record speak for itself when it comes to re-election. But if you need the financial backing of a major party, make the full conversion at the next election.

If you want to switch parties I think you should do what Phil Gramm did. Immediately resign and run for re-election as the candidate of your new party.

It seems lately the Democratic party is leaving many of the voters. I just can't believe that a large contingent of democrats can be happy with the lurch to the left that the party has taken.

The party needs to go further left regarding money in politics and economics. :coffee:

The influence of public sector unions is just as insidious as corporate money.

I've always agreed with this, but I'm guessing the amount ($'s) is less considering 7% of non public workers are represented now. But you'll find that the progressives in the party are in favor of getting all money including union money out of politics.
