Well on a positive note the world will now get to see how a real leader handles an attack on his citizens as Mr Trudeau will lead with diplomacy and not masculinity. Justin may give Iranians dual Canadian citizenship for killing his fellow countrymen. PM Trudeau has gravitas

I think the most likely scenario was an Iranian who was trained by a half-trained Iranian who was trained by another half-trained Iranian who was trained by a Russian contractor probably mistook the radar return for a bogey and pulled the trigger

That’s really the only way you can shoot down a commercial airliner squawking a commercial airliner transponder code

(Do not ascribe to malice that which can be adequately explained as incompetence)

Agreed. The highlighted part is what makes "accident" a total BS excuse.

And definitely true given that what Iran was firing during the "payback" were surface-to-surface missiles, not surface-to-air missiles, which is what hit the airliner.

How far away from where the missles to Iraq were fired, is this location?

We shot down an Iranian commercial plane in the late '80s on accident. 290 civilians died.

I think both were probably accidents. By idiots.

I've seen a meme on that on Facebook already. I suppose that's a satrical take off of the Republican spin about Democrats sympathizing with Soleimani or mourning his death. Of course they have not been doing either of those things.

What happened when the USS Vincennes shot down a commercial airliner in 1988? That's a serious question. How could a US warship make that kind of mistake?

BTW, while it might work out in the long run, all this stuff that's been going on with Iran is a result of the posture Trump decided to take. HIs decision to have the united states renege on the deal and his "maximum pressure" approach. The increase in Iranian proxy attacks. The attacks on tankers in the Persian Gulf. And, yes, this downing of an airliner. Yes, the Iranians did it. But none of this stuff would be happening if Trump hadn't decided to do the things he did. Right now, all things Iran are worse than they were.

Maybe in the long run they will be better. But for Trump to try to pass responsibility for the current instability off as Obama's fault is pretty bad.

It was ultimately attributed to an over-aggressive skipper, in a weapons free situation. The Navy (via Vincennes) said the plane wasn’t squawking IFF. The Iranians said it was. If it wasn’t, the shoot down was justified given what was going on at the time.

Ultimately, the Reagan admin apologized to the Iranian government and family members got a payout of about 250k for each passenger.

Here’s the one kink in the story though - having spent a lot of time in CIC i n Navy ships... if the plane was squawking everybody in CIC would have known it. AEGIS missile systems query air contacts continuously. To fire on a contact that is showing civilian IFF modes would require all kinds of overrides and half the crew would have known it.

I’m satisfied with our response though. It was a fog of war situation which is exactly what this latest shoot down was.

Why Iran was allowing commercial traffic and had not shut that airport down is the real head scratcher here though

You know Iran had the anti-air batteries on highest alert figuring there'd be some incoming with stars and stripes painted on it.

Is there any doubt the Iranians shot that plane down? I mean, the fuselage footage even shows shrapnel holes riddled throughout.
100% certain that Epstein didn't commit suicide. And neither did the Ukrainian airline pilot.

I obviously wasn’t in on the intel briefing but I think there may be something to what Mike Lee was saying -

He wants good intel that Soleimani was orchestrating an imminent attack. If he says the intel on that wasn’t compelling then I’d take him on his word. I suspect the evidence was circumstantial at best

But - it is well established that Soleimani is responsible for numerous American deaths over the last several years, and that the storming of the US Embassy (legitimately accredited Embassy in Iraq) which was happening near simultaneously was being orchestrated by Quds Force supplied militias.

The guy is Iran’s Reinhard Heydrich and given his activities he’s at least as legitimate a target as some Yemeni American citizen spouting death to America on the internets.

Oddly, Democrats never had a problem with the 3,797 people, including 324 civilians, that Obama killed with 542 drones without consulting Congress.
