Agree to a point. There's no doubt Gates was trying to "big time" the officer. He would have done better to show the ID, inform the policeman there was no problem, then shut the door. I've been Gate's without the belligerence before dealing with a power-hungry obnoxious cop, so I know how mad he could have felt being in his own home. If you are in your own house, you don't have to talk with the cops, just shut the door....

All of what you say is true but under these circumstances he was answering a reported burglarly call. He can't just walk away and say "oh, okay then I'll see you later." He did nothing wrong here. Can you imagine if he just walks away from this? He had every right to ask for ID that showed the man's proof of residence which the ID he provided did not do. The cop shouldn't apologize for answering a burglarly call and following the proper procedure just because the black guy took offense to him doing his job.

Don't disagree. But he was placed in cuffs after showing the ID I think....shure, Gates is a dumba$$ for delaying on producing the ID. And I feel secure stating that Gates was belligerent while showing the ID. But once produced, easy to determine that there was not a break-in, just leave....surely, being a cop in the Boston area, this is not the first time he's dealt with an obnoxious, self-important a$$hole....

I've listened to detailed reports of the Gates incidents from both sides, and TECHNICALLY the officer was legally justified for his actions. From a discretionary view, however, he could have de-escalated the situation, but Gates over-the-top belligerence failed the attitude test negating any chance the situation could be resolved without someone losing face: And that "win" never goes to the person in handcuffs. Just one of those things...and but for Gates position as a heralded limousine liberal, nobody would have ever heard about this incident.
BTW, this had nothing to do with Gates being black...it had everything to do wth him being an an anti-authoritarian *******. Plenty of people of all colors in "that category"...just that most anti-authoritarian ******* KNOW they're that way, have had their ass kicked at least a few times, and understand it comes with the territory.
